Straight up – one of the BEST shows on TV! On May 17th, 2017 the comedy Downward Dog premiered on the ABC network with eight episodes and it took the audience by storm. The series is produced by Animal Media Group, Mosaic Media Group, ABC Studios and Legendary Television and executive produced by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel and the creators and writers of the original eponymous web-series as well as this TV comedy, Michael Killen and Samm Hodges, who also voices the dog Martin. Allison Tolman plays the role of Nan, Lucas Neff stars as Jason, Barry Rothbart as Kevin and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Jenn.
First of all, this show is hilarious! Even if you are not into dogs. The dry face and the philosophical talks Martin gives into the camera are just incredibly smart and funny and it is very very hard, not to grin your face off, watching this character trying to figure out the human world around him from his point of view. Downward dog is the story of Nan, his owner and somewhat struggling millennial – in parts as seen from her dog’s perspective. As the viewer is let into the secret of Martin’s incredibly thoughtful mind and his sometimes over-complex thought processes – everyone else in the show sees him as “just a dog”. And that is why this concept works so well, because the balance between the two worlds - Nan’s and Martin’s – is perfectly kept by switching back and forth from human reality to dog reality.
Raving reviews and expected renewal
The critics are raving about this incredibly smart and literally down-to-earth concept of a normal untrained dog playing the main part in this comedy series. There are no crazy tricks or dangerous scenes in this TV show – just to calm down all those animal activists out there (I am one myself!) – just a former shelter dog FINALLY getting his big moment! That is what makes this whole show so great! Martin – whose real name is actually Ned – came straight from a shelter in Chicago after being stuck there for one and a half years. Now, he is one of the biggest stars on TV! Perfect! The average 4.72 million viewers per episode are no coincidence and it is only a question of time, in our opinion, until ABC officially announces Season 2 for Downward Dog.
