Background info
The first season of the comedy animation series Imaginary Mary premiered on ABC on March 29th, 2017 with eight episodes. The series is produced by Guarascio Productions, ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television and executive produced by Adam F. Goldberg, David Guarascio, Shawn Levy, Doug Robinson and the creator of the TV series, Patrick Osborne. The main cast are Jenna Elfman as Alice, Stephen Schneider as Ben and Rachel Dratch as the voice of Mary. The show was cancelled after the first season.
Just as Alice seems to get her love life back on track when it gets more serious with father of three Ben, all of a sudden her imaginary childhood friend Mary shows up and starts messing it all up again. And Alice is by no means a floosy head, because until then this fiercely independent woman was very much focused on her career and had her life under wraps. When Alice meets Ben, things change considerably and she reconsiders her priorities. Mary shows up literally unannounced and tries to help Alice with her transition of being a steel headed career lady to a family woman, which ends up in more chaos than anything else.
Declining ratings and no season 2 for Mary
If we just look at the numbers, they don’t seem that bad with 5.4 Million viewers for its premiere and 3.5 Million viewers thereafter. But for ABC with seemingly much higher viewing figure expectations for their comedy series, these numbers were bad enough to cancel the entire show for its second season. The overall rating of only 5.5 out of 10 stars on IMDb and the rather dismal 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes seal the fate of fluffy Imaginary Mary, who will not come back with Season 2.
