Storyline and production info
Notorious is a new American criminal and legal drama series that premiered on ABC on September 22, 2016. The show was created by Josh Berman and Allie Hagan, executive produced by Michael Engler, Kenny Meiselas, Brian Gersh, Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry and produced by Osprey Productions, ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television.
The drama explores the ambiguous relationship between the criminal law and the media world, specifically, the manipulation of public opinion after a certain high-profile incident, and is based on two real-life personas. Renowned defense attorney Jake Gregorian (played by Daniel Sunjata, and based on Mark Geragos) and medial mogul and television producer Julia George (played by Piper Perabo, and based on Wendy Walker) are at the center of the storyline, where personal affairs are closely intertwined with the professional lives.
Reception and renewal potential
The initial critical response to Notorious was mostly negative, with 32% on Metacritic and 25% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a more generous 6.4/10 score on IMDb. It is mostly bashed as implausible, and the characters for being stereotypical, and while it is clear that ABC is looking for a strong, female-driven series to repeat the success of its popular drama series Scandal, it is also apparent that Notorious is not it – at least, not yet. The show premiered to 5.39 million viewers (up to 8.13 million in Live+7), a demo rating of 1.1 and a share of 4, down to 4.2 million for the third episode. ABC has not yet announced its plans for the future of Notorious, and we will keep you informed when any news are revealed.
Season 1 recap
The future is not looking too bright for ABC's freshman drama series Notorious, which wrapped up the broadcast of its first season on December 8, 2016. The season finale delivered just 2.58 million viewers and 0.5 in the demo, down sharply from the already humble 5.4 million viewers and 1.1 demo rating that the series premiere earned. Although the subject matter of the interplay between big business and the media is intriguing, the critics have mostly slammed the less-than-subtle manner in which it is approached. The season finale ended with Julia being kidnapped by El Toro's people, which was rather predictable considering her previous encounter with them. The condition of her release is an interview where the drug lord is portrayed favorably. Whether or not we will ever find out what happens next is still unclear, since the show's original thirteen-episode order has been cut to ten, which is a really bad sign for the show's renewal prospects. However, ABC has not canceled the series yet, so please stay tuned, and we'll bring you the latest news.
