Summary and plot
Secrets and Lies is a mystery drama TV series broadcast by ABC in the United States. Developed by Barbie Kligman and produced by ABC Studios, Avenue K Productions, Hoodlum Entertainment and Kapital Entertainment, the series is loosely based on an eponymous Australian drama. The first season of Secrets and Lies premiered on March 1, 2015 and the second season was launched on September 25, 2016.
Season 1 starred Ryan Phillippe as Ben Crawford, a self-employed decorator who discovers the body of a young boy and is immediately suspected of murder by Detective Andrea Cornell, played by Juliette Lewis. Having suffered a blackout after a night of heavy drinking, Ben is shunned by the community before he has a chance to prove his innocence. With numerous plot twists and turns, the first season of Secrets and Lies introduces audiences to a slew of other characters, including Ben’s wife, friends and neighbors. Shortly after renewing the show for season 2, it was announced that Ryan Phillippe would not return. The lead role in in the second season is played by Michael Ealy, who portrays Eric Warner, a newly married man suspected of murdering his wife Kate (Jordana Brewster) and the investigation that ensues. Juliette Lewis stayed on as Detective Andrea Cornell.
Reviews and renewal information
Secrets and Lies has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. While more than 6 million viewers tuned in for the series premiere, the ratings dipped slightly throughout the first season. With a less than stellar 36% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and scoring 48/100, on Metacritic, the whodunnit show still found a reasonable amount of support and managed to attract 6.5 million viewers for its season one finale. However, in between the seasons the series lost a significant number of viewers. Just 4.06 million fans tuned in to see the season 2 premiere, which earned a share of 3 and a demo rating of 1. It is difficult to predict whether Secrets and Lies will be renewed for a third season, since it will depend heavily on how the remaining episodes of the current season fare ratings-wise, so please stay tuned, and we’ll keep you informed.

On December 4, 2016 ABC's mystery drama series Secrets and Lies has concluded the broadcast of its 10-episode sophomore season. The biggest reveal of the season finale was the shocking fact that Kate was killed by Amanda in a fit of jealous rage, albeit accidentally, an unlikely event that no one could have really seen coming. The series experienced a significant 42.7% decline in viewership between seasons 1 (an average of 5.2 million viewers per episode) and 2 (3.2 million viewers per episode), and more criticism poured in for the second installment, citing the series' descent into unnecessary melodrama and its unsympathetic characters. The palpable ratings issues mean that the future of the show is ambiguous, and viewers need to stay tuned in order to find out whether ABC will commission a third season of Secrets and Lies.
