Summary and storyline

Home Fires is a British TV drama about a group of women trapped in an isolated rural community at the beginning of WWII. Far from the battlefields of war, the community suffers a loss of husbands and sons, leaving the women to pick up the fragmented pieces of their families. Inspired by a non-fiction book by Julie Summers, Home Fires premiered on ITV on May 3, 2015 and the second series aired on April 2, 2016. The show is based on the Jambusters novel by Julie Summers, created by Simon Block and executive produced by Frances Hopkinson and Catherine Oldfield.

The six-part mini-series stars acclaimed British actress Francesca Annis as Joyce Cameron, a manipulative and wealthy ex-president of the Women’s Institute. Set in a small Cheshire community, the group of women must put aside their differences and come together in their support of the Home Front. Samantha Bond, Claire Rushbrook, Fenella Woolgar, Leanne Best and Ed Stoppard are all part of the cast.

Current Season, ratings and renewal

Home Fires captured a loyal audience following with just six episodes in series one. Averaging over 6 million viewers in the first chapter, the show boasts an 8.0 out of 10 rating on IMDB, while Samantha Bond, who plays Frances Barden, was recently nominated for a Satellite Award. The second series premiered to 5.2 million viewers and a 23.7% share of the audience, with the second episode gathering 4.7 million viewers. Considering the ratings success and positive critical reception, it would be safe to assume that Home Fires is a likely candidate for renewal, so please stay tuned for announcements from the network.

UPDATED May 11, 2016: In spite of the very competitive ratings, ITV WWII drama Home Fires has been canceled. The second season ended in a massive cliffhanger, with a fighter plane crashing into one of the village homes, and the consequences still unknown at the second series' end. and the production team expressed their deep regret at having to end the story arcs so abruptly and unexpectedly. Home Fires is a fabulous series and needs to continue. Imagine a tv series
with logical dialogue and fabulous acting. I think it's time to put experienced
producers in charge of programing and acknowledge that there are very
intelligent viewers enjoying shows of this quality. I have purchased season
one & two and look forward to purchasing season three. sch

Remember another wonderful program "Island at War" that was cut off/cancelled because of some absolutely inane reason. They are still selling the DVD's even though there is no ending to the story! Now the same thing with Home Fires. Another excellent production, great story line, with top-drawer acting performance simply cut off with no thought about the viewers, or the cast. We are all supposed to just guess what's next? Bring us to a conclusion in Series 3, but bring us a conclusion, please!

"Home Fires" is my family and friends' favorite program. We was so happy when we found a show that didn't insult our intelligence and was most interesting to watch. We are amazed to find out that it's been cancelled and so very disappointed. It's so difficult to find programming that really has such appeal to the general audience. I think a huge mistake was made; hopefully the decision will be reconsidered for the huge number of fans.

I have no idea, why in the name of all that is holy, this show would ever be cancelled. It is one of the finest series ever to be on TV. What with all the violent, sexual shows out there, it is truly refreshing to have something of this caliber to be able to view. It is a must-see in our home on Sunday night. We can always count on fine TV programming from the Brits; they really know how to write and produce outstanding shows. I think of Foyle's War and of course Downton Abbey and this show certainly, in my books, rates right up there with these. If you care about your public and their opinion at all, please give some reconsideration to cancelling this series. That would be a tragic mistake.

Please do not end the series "Home Fires". It is one of the most entertaining & informative series that I've seen on PBS. It is the Downtown Abbey for WWII! Since it is woman centric, I fine it is one of the much more compelling series that I watched on PBS.

I just found this show this year on PBS, and went to Amazon Prime to binge watch the first season. I loved it! I am so disappointed to see that it was canceled! How could you cancel a show that was so well done and well liked? I thought it was just a two season show and expected to have some story lines wrapped up tonight, but then to find out it was canceled and the stories were left hanging is just sad!

One of the best shows ever on television. This is the kind of TV programming that is desperately needed. The acting is superb, the story has a heart and is historically accurate . I cannot believe that it may not be rescheduled. Please reconsider and perhaps do a little more advertising so that the viewership will increase. This show is timely and a reminder of what the world endured during WWII. We need reminders now more than ever.

What a terrible way to end a show with everything being up in smoke, literally. Characters and plots were fantastic. What a tragedy to end the show at this point. Everyone keep complaining and maybe it will be renewed.

I am so shocked and disappointed that this wonderful show has been cancelled. This show is a great show, that I looked forward to watching. Now I am left with no closure on these amazing characters of this show. There are not many programs that have brought such an amazing cast of characters that I find myself so enthralled with. The story lines are some of the best. Please do not leave us wondering...how could you, so many people watch this program...

I'm so disappointed there is not to be a season 3 - I have sat on the edge of my seat in the episodes - crying at some point in every single one wishing good for some characters and bad for others - even going as far as requesting the book that it is based on to read and now find there is not to be another series I agree with Ann Woods that it should be picked up - pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I cannot believe Home Fires season 3 has been canceled!
What a fantastic British, period drama.
**ITV have a really bad track record of doing that and it always makes me wary of their programs.**
I thought BBC had control of it, sadly not.
All I can say is that if enough people object they may see the light and bring back the wonderful actors in a new season.
Yeh, I bet a reality show took its' place! Typical ITV!

From Australia. Have just watched the final episode of Series 2 on pay TV and then have read that Series 3 has been cancelled despite the fact that half of the scripts for Series 3 had been written. This information is from a tweet from one of the cast members. A similar thing happened with the Australian show "A Place to Call Home" which was produced and broadcast by a commercial TV channel and cancelled after two series leaving many storylines unresolved. After protests from viewers the show was picked up by Foxtel pay TV who has produced and broadcast Series 3 and Series 4. Perhaps a U.K. pay TV company could do the same thing for Home Fires.

From Australia. Rarely does such a wonderful series come to our TV screens. Rarely are women portrayed in their true light, strong, resourceful and compassionate. And just when it happens, and a true chord in our hearts is touched, the bureaucrats in the halls of power dump it for crassity and mediocrity. Find a way to overcome the macho views who seek to air sex and violence!! and bring our Home Fires back.
