Series info and storyline
Created by and starring Denis Leary, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is an American comedy TV series that revolves around the rock band The Heathens, which was popular in the late ‘80’s – early ‘90’s, but has fallen into obscurity following a life of excess. The series’ first season premiered on FX on July 16, 2015 and has enjoyed decent viewer ratings. The second season has kicked off on June 30, 2016.
Johnny Rock (Denis Leary) and his band were big after the release of their first album in the late ‘80’s, but a life full of partying, cocaine and alcohol has set Rock and his colleagues on a path to failure as rock musicians. When the band’s lead guitarist discovers Rock in bed with his wife, there is no more working together and the band breaks up. Twenty five years later, Rock is a broke loser, living in New York, addicted to prescription drugs this time around. But he gets a chance when his estranged daughter Gigi (Elizabeth Gillies) knocks on his door and proposes that he revives The Heathers and makes her the lead singer of the band, with him being her coach and song-writer.
Reviews, viewership and renewal prospects
So far the show has enjoyed good reviews and a stable fan base. Although the series is not as popular as a lot of other shows on FX, the network did decide to announce its plans to renew it for another season. The current second season is averaging above the 0.5 million viewers mark and has a 0.2 demo rating. The numbers are slightly higher than last season's which instills some hope in the possibility of the show being renewed for yet another installment. UPDATED September 11, 2016: Dennis Leary's comedy series Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll was canceled by FX immediately following the conclusion of its second season. The sophomore installment has averaged just 420,000 total viewers per episode, and 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demo, down a hefty 30% from the first season run. A cancelation was a more or less expected one, so unless another network picks it up – farewell, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll!
