Storyline and cast

The Bastard Executioner is a new American historical fiction drama series that follows a 14th century warrior whose life is forever changed with divine intervention. Created for FX by Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy), the show premiered on September 15, 2015.

Set in the middle ages, The Bastard Executioner is about Wilkin Brattle, a Welsh knight in the army of King Edward II of England who is beseeched by a divine messenger to lay down his sword and lead a life of a journeyman executioner. Guided by a mystical healer named Annora, manipulated by a devious Chamberlain with grand political aspirations, and driven by a deep connection with the Baroness Lady Love,Wilkin struggles to navigate political, emotional and spiritual pitfalls in his quest to understand his higher purpose in life.

The pilot season of The Bastard Executioner was directed and executive-produced by Paris Barclay, who also directed 15 episodes of the hit series Sons of Anarchy, while other “Sons” alumnae, Nichole Beattle and Charles Murray joined the staff of writers. Season 1 of the highly anticipated series has garnered mixed reviews, receiving praise for action scenes, writing and performance, but criticized for its portrayal and constant reliance on violence rather than straight storyline. So whether or not the show will survive the attacks and return for another season remains to be seen. Thus far no announcements have been made by FX regarding a potential renewal of the show for season 2.

I cannot believe they didn't do a second season. There was still so much story that needed to be told. I'm very sad about this.

This is exactly why I stopped watching TV series period ....the networks draw you in then cancel the series ... I boycott all network series no matter how high the ratings ...I got burned with Constantine now the [censored] Executioner, I'm done..

I agree. This is sad. Im one who watches after the series has aired, and I am dismayed to see that this show is gone!
