General information and cast
Top of the Lake, otherwise also known as China Girl, is a crime mystery drama series on the British BBC Two network and originally debuted in March 2013 with 7 episodes. Series 2 premiered on July 27th, 2017 after a long hiatus with another set of 7 brand new episodes. Top of the Lake also airs on Sundance TV. Created by Jane Campion and Gerard Lee, the show hails from the production companies See-Saw Films, Escapade Pictures and Screen Australia and is executive produced by Jamie Laurenson and Jane Campion. The strong cast features the incredibly talented Elisabeth Moss, the amazing Nicole Kidman and Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie. Holly Hunter, Peter Mullan, David Wenham, Tom Wright and Jay Ryan also star.
Set in a very remote mountain region in New Zealand, the disappearance of 12-year old Tui brings in inexperienced Robin Griffin (played by Elisabeth Moss), who is taking on the investigation as lead detective. Tui was not just a young girl, she was five months pregnant and before her disappearance she was seen walking across a freezing lake. But that is not all, because the detective herself had to experience some traumatic events a few years ago in that very same town. The search for Tui is on and at the same time Griffin has to deal with her own demons that keep coming back to haunt her.
