The first season of the reality competition TV series Cosplay Melee premiered on the Syfy network on March 21st, 2017 with six episodes. The series is produced by Matador Content and executive produced by Todd Lubin, Ian Mallahan and Jay Peterson. The series is hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown.
Each week, Cosplay Melee follows four candidates as they put their skills to the test creating interesting costume plays for which they have to design the costumes and also act the part themselves for a more realistic performance. The winner of each episode wins $10,000 after the judges LeeAnna Vamp and costume Designer Christian Beckman decided, who they want to award the money to. Cosplay is short for the practice of dressing up as movie, book or video games characters and this kind of activity has become very popular, particularly in the sci-fi and gaming communities. The creations of the people, who like to dress up as their favorite characters range from pop culture inspired themes to anime characters and it’s all about enacting that particular character.
