THAT doesn’t happen very often! On February 15th, 2017 a brand new drama series called Doubt premiered on the CBS network with initially 13 planned episodes, but after the second episode had aired, CBS yanked the series out of its schedule and basically cancelled the show until further notice. Oops! Produced by Midwest Livestock, Timberman-Beverly Productions and CBS Television Studios, the show is created by Tony Phelan and Joan Rater, who also executive produce together with Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman.
Yet another promising lawyer drama, Doubt focusses foremost on the bright and beautiful Sadie Ellis, played by Katherine Heigl, a brilliant attorney at a boutique law firm, who is romantically involved with her very client Billy Brennan, played by Stephen Pasquale, who supposedly committed a brutal crime 24 years ago. This poses a real threat to the successful defense of this case and could jeopardize everything Sadie and the rest of the team have worked for. The amazing Laverne Cox, very well known for her role in Orange Is The New Black, plays the role of Cameron Wirth and Dreama Walker, Kobi Libii, Elliott Gould and Dule Hill also star.
The controversy around this new series started way back, when the original TV series was slated to come out in 2015. Back then, the lead role of Sadie Ellies was played by KaDee Strickland and Terry Sears as Billy Brennan, before CBS made the somewhat odd decision to recast the show with Heigl and Pasquale in the lead roles.
Now, when it comes to the apparent reason as to why CBS then went ahead and yanked Doubt in its new format after just two episodes from its programming, we get to read a lot about low viewing figures. This is rather surprising, because the first episode of this new show raked in an impressive 5.31 Million viewers and 7.64 Million overall, which is way higher than most TV series could ever even dream to achieve. And even though the figures for the second episode then dropped to a still very high 4.03 Million viewers, the show was pulled. Knowing some TV viewing numbers of other series, these figures don’t exactly warrant for a cancellation that abruptly in midseason, but apparently CBS needed to get rid of Doubt rather quickly. All of this is rather bizarre, and regardless of those critic’s reviews, which never really matter much as long as the viewing figures are good, this decision to yank the show from its scheduled programming all together is everything but logical. It almost seems like Heigl is cursed and everything she is involved in goes under, which is very sad, because we like Katherine!
As of today it is not yet clear, whether we will ever get to see the remaining 11 episodes of the first installment of the series. Stay tuned and we will keep you updated when Doubt comes back with the remainder of Season 1 or even Season 2.
