Gibbs is making a comeback in the NCIS universe, taking center stage in a new CBS drama that serves as a prequel to the long-standing procedural. CBS has officially ordered a straight-to-series for "NCIS: Origins," focusing on the early days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, set to air in the 2024-25 broadcast season. This project is a collaboration involving the two actors who portrayed Gibbs on NCIS, Mark Harmon and his son Sean Harmon, along with seasoned NCIS writers-producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North. CBS Studios, the force behind the NCIS franchise, is also contributing to the production.
Narrated by Mark Harmon, "NCIS: Origins" kicks off in 1991, preceding the events of the original NCIS series. The new show explores Gibbs' initiation into the world of special agents at the nascent NCIS Camp Pendleton office, where he establishes himself on a gritty, unconventional team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks. (In the main series, Franks, played by Muse Watson, appeared as a recurring character and met his demise in Season 8 but continued to serve as a sounding board for Gibbs on challenging cases.)
