About the series
Obviously, not everything on TV is funny. A lot of material is very informative and sometimes goes a little under your skin. Babies Behind Bars, which premiered on the 31st of January 2017 on the channel LMN, has to be in that category. This reality documentary is produced by T Group Productions and Pat McGee Pictures. Executive producers are Peter Tarshis, Jennifer Wagman and Laura Fleury.
The prison system is a scary institution, unfortunately very necessary for a functional society – and even more unfortunate for the babies, who are born behind bars. Surprisingly, that happens more often than one might think, as almost 10% of the annually 75,000 imprisoned women give birth whilst they are incarcerated. In most cases, these babies are being separated immediately after their birth – which is an insanely cruel fate for them! However, there seems to be a silver lining, because studies have shown, that – if those babies are allowed to stay with their moms for their first year – they will live healthier and often also crime free lives. Currently there are only very few programs in the American female prison system that actually allow such a thing and this show has exclusive access to these “fortunate” moms and their newborn babies behind bars.
