You need to be a high tech geek of some sort for this one, or at least you have to be into super fancy futuristic technology to like it. That seems to be the gist of Fox’s new crime drama APB, which premiered on the 6th of January 2017. Bungalow Media + Productions, Sketch Films and Flying Glass of Milk Productions are who’s behind this police show, the executive producers are Trey Callaway (CSI:NY), Matt Nix, Robert Friedman and Len Wiseman, famous for the Underworld series.
The plot of APB is a little farfetched, but then again, in the times we are currently living in nothing seems impossible. Basically, some super rich tech billionaire buys a Chicago Police station, after his best friend gets murdered and nothing is getting done to solve the crime. Played by the ever likable Justin Kirk (Weeds), Gideon Reeves then infuses this struggling Police Precinct with ubercool technology and gadgets, trying to improve the performance of the law guardians of the city. We also get to see Natalie Martinez, Taylor Handley, Abraham Benrubi and Bryant Romo.
Viewership and potential renewal
Now, this idea does sound pretty cool, but it’s not new – and if you don’t have a decent plot and/or amazing actors, who can carry such a premises, then all the excitement about this new technology and sometimes James Bond like gadgetry fizzles out rather quickly, because there seems to be no urgency to any of it. Unfortunately, that is what the overall reception of APB sounds like. On top of that, the viewer numbers have dropped so much, from 6.1 Million viewers to just 2.7 Million for last Monday’s episode, bringing the average rating to just 0.86 in the 18-49 demographic – it seems highly likely that this cop show won’t get renewed and we will not get to see season 2 of APB.
