Production info and storyline
On January 2, 2017 ITV has launched a new historic drama series. The Halcyon hails from Left Bank Pictures and is created and written by Charlotte Jones, with Jack Lothian, Sarah Dillard and Martha Hiller co-writing. Andy Harries, Sharon Hughff and Jack Lothian serve as executive producers. The freshman series contains eight one-hour episodes.
The Halcyon's narrative focuses on the inside workings of a glamorous high-class London hotel in 1940. The impact of war on every aspect of civilian life is explored in the series that stars an impressive cast lead by some of Britain's most acclaimed actors – Steven Mackintosh and Olivia Williams. Other actors featured in this period drama are Kara Tointon, Alex Jennings, Matt Ryan and Mark Benton.
Viewership and renewal prospects
The series premiered to 4.86 million viewers and has garnered mixed reviews, earning a score of 6.5/10 on IMDb so far. The cinematography, costumes and sets are praised unanimously, there's no denial that they are beautifully executed, with all of the boxes checked off, yet the key aspects that affect any show's overall quality first and foremost, such as directing, the script and the pacing, are mostly criticized by the reviewers. It's difficult to predict how the fate of the series will develop, but it looks like a tossup so far.
