Series concept and production info
The Victorian Slum is a new social history documentary airing on BBC Two since its premiere on October 17, 2016. The show is produced by Wall to Wall, executive produced by Cate Hall and presented by Michael Mosley.
This five-part series recreates a corner of London's East End in the Victorian era, with several modern families living in one large reconstituted Victorian building divided into small dwellings similar to those of the time portrayed. The experiment went on for three weeks, with the families expected to earn a living and survive the slum life. Paying up for their room and board on time turned out to be even more difficult than the participants initially thought. They undertake trades like candle-making, tailoring, wood-turning, and even sell goods like soap and flowers to modern-day Londoners, who probably think it is a part of Halloween-related fun.
