Series info and storyline
Shoot the Messenger is a new CBC criminal drama and thriller television series that debuted on October 10, 2016. The series is created and executive produced by Sudz Sutherland and Jennifer Holness, and produced by Hungry Eyes Film and Television. The first season was partially inspired by the 2013 Rob Ford scandal, although the show was not meant to be about Ford, and is comprised of eight episodes.
The storyline is focused on Daisy Channing (Elyse Levesque), a talented, driven, naive yet flawed young journalist who becomes a witness to what seems to be a gang-related murder. Later she becomes inadvertently involved with the business, political and criminal circles that are all tied together in the city of Toronto. Other characters include editor Mary Fowler (Alex Kingston), Daisy's colleague Simon Olendski (Lucas Bryant) and police detective Frank Lutz (Lyriq Bent).
Reception and potential renewal
The series has garnered reasonably positive reviews, and is praised for its fast-paced compelling plot, emotional complexity and dynamic characters. IMDb viewers place it at 5.3/10, and the critics claim that it is not quite grubby and oppressive enough for a down-to-earth story about newspaper reporting, but even they admit that it is a gripping show with substance and potential. CBC has not revealed its decision on the future of Shoot the Messenger yet, but we think that it deserves a second season and are hoping that the network agrees.
