New drama series on Fox – storyline and info
Fox has launched a new sports-themed drama series on September 22, 2016. Pitch was created and executive produced by Dan Fogelman and Rick Singer, with Kevin Falls, Helen Bartlett, Paris Barclay, Jess Rosenthal and Tony Bill also executive producing. Barnstorm Films, Left Coast Productions, Rhode Island Ave. Productions and 20th Century Fox Productions collaborate on the production.
Pitch centers on Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury), the (fictional) first ever female pitcher to enlist in the Major League’s San Diego Padres. The expected troubles of the fish out of the water situation, where, in this particular case, a woman is thrown into an all-male world, are all there, and Ginny sets out to prove herself to her teammates and gets romantically involved with star catcher Mike Lawson (Mark-Paul Gosselar). Some of her fellow players support Ginny, others are completely averse to the idea of a woman baseball player.
Current season, ratings and prospects of renewal
The series has received much praise as a whole, with Branbuty’s performance particularly highly commended. She has been called a breakout star, and her character is an inspiring role model for female athletes. There has actually been some criticism as well, mostly accusing the show of a superficial approach that builds on a feminist premise yet fails to deliver. Pitch premiered to 4.23 million viewers, and lost about 20% of its audience by the third episode, which drew 3.5 million viewers. It has a 7/10 IMDb score and an impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. While it seems like most factors are pointing to a renewal, the viewership is not as strong as it may have been, so let’s wait until Fox reveals its future plans for Pitch. Stay tuned and we will bring you the latest information on the show’s fate.
Season 1 recap
The 10-episode freshman season of popular Fox's sports drama Pitch has wrapped up on December 8, 2016. An unexpectedly sad ending for everyone - Amelia and Ginny have a serious fight, Ginny and Mike end on an extremely awkward note, and in the last moments of the season finale Ginny's career is placed in serious jeopardy by an injury. This is the most serious cliffhanger, because if Ginny is out of the game, there is no more story to tell, at least not under this title. The season finale drew an audience of 2.89 million viewers, earning a 0.8 demo rating, and the series as a whole has been praised, earning strong ratings on review aggregators. While no announcements regarding a second season have yet been made, a second season may very well be in the works soon. Please stay tuned for announcements regarding a potential renewal.
