About the series

A new British comedy/drama series, Brief Encounters is based on Jacqueline Gold's autobiographical book Good Vibrations: The True Story of Ann Summers and has premiered on ITV on July 4, 2016. The series was created by Oriane Messina and Fay Rusling who executive produce along with Danielle Lux, Arabella McGuigan and Matthew Read. The show hails from CPL Productions and contains six 45-minute episodes.

The saucy series is set in the 1980s when Ann Summers' employee (and future CEO) invents an ingenuous way to sell sex toys and naughty lingerie to women. The story chronicles the circumstances that push four women friends towards becoming “party organizers”, where they sell these goods to their friends in the privacy of their own homes. There's plenty of family drama, hearty laughs, and enough of both dirty and proper action. The four central characters are very different, which makes it all the more interesting.

Top-notch ratings and renewal prospects

Brief Encounters premiered with an excellent 4.65 million viewers, and has a 7/10 IMDb rating so far. The performances of the four main characters have garnered quite a bit of praise, and they are Sophia Rundle (as Stephanie Kirke), Angela Griffin (as Nita Dempsey), Penelope Wilton (as Pauline Spake) and Sharon Rooney (as Dawn Toxton). ITV has yet to renew the show for a second series, and the future looks bright so far, so please stay tuned and we'll keep you informed regarding the fate of Brief Encounters.

UPDATED November 9, 2016: Following just one series on the air, ITV has canceled Brief Encounters, a 1980s quirky female-fronted dramedy. The reasons for the cancelation are not immediately clear at this point, but the fans are somewhat puzzled and frustrated since the show enjoyed positive reception and delivered solid viewership ratings in its freshman series. Farewell, Brief Encounters, perhaps another network will fancy the feisty idea that formed the basis for the storyline, and resurrect the series.

I am avid fan of this series and our ITV Choice channel from the beautiful island of Penang in Malaysia. It's really cruelty on ITV's part to cancel both Home Fires and this after such a roaring opening season. What's not to love about these series? Solid and credible stroylines animated by stellar performances from cast. What a pity!

So, this is the second time in as many months that I've enjoyed an ITV series - the last one being Home Fires and yet again ITV has decided to cancel a further season. I think it's alsolutely appalling and unacceptable that ITV has so little regard for its viewers - seriously, how dare they treat us with such contempt - we invest in the characters and they just decide to pull the plug - it's not like Home Fires or Brief Encounters weren't rating. Shame on the powers that be - I shall think twice before watching another series.

I Live in Australia and cant wait till season 2

I live in Australia and we have just watched the last episode of Brief Encounters. Can't wait for a second series. The acting was amazing and the storylines funny and poignant. Penelope Wilton is a standout but the rest of the cast were also excellent. Thoroughly enjoyable series as only the Brits (I'm one too) can do!

Please, Please,Please let there be a second series. This is easily one of the best programmes on TV. The music is great, the humour is brilliant, love the characters & the storyline. My Monday nights won't be the same from now on. Will miss this series soooooo much. :sad:

Loved it! Really well cast, great storylines and a brilliant script with lots of laughs. The 80s music, fashion and hair all added to the charm. Think there's definitely a second series worth of material left in these characters and their stories.
