Series info, storyline and cast
American Gothic is a US mystery drama television series that premiered on CBS on June 22, 2016. It is created by Connie Brinkerhoff, executive produced by Brinkerhoff, Matt Shakman, Todd Cohen, James Frey, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank and produced by Full Fathom Five, Hyla Regilla Productions, Amblin Television and CBS Television Studios.
The series chronicles the life of the Hawthones, a well-to-do Boston family in the concrete business, whose members have to face the consequences of a life-changing secret becoming revealed. The recently deceased patriarch of the family is suspected of having been a serial killer, and one of the relatives might have been an accomplice in his crimes. The main cast includes Juliet Rylance as Alison Hawthorne-Price, Antony Starr as Garrett Hawthorne, Justin Chatwin as Cam Hawthorne, Megan Ketch as Tessa Ross, Eliot Knight as Brady Ross, and others.
Viewership and prospects of renewal
Critical reception of the series is mixed to average, with a 51 out of 100 Metacritic score, 61% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.4/10 on IMDb. The general consensus is that American Gothic is far from being compelling, but provides light character-driven summer entertainment with a traditional feel to it. There's no shock value, and many viewers are actually grateful for that. American Gothic premiered to 3.43 million viewers, and is holding up fairly well, but whether or not CBS finds these numbers high enough to continue with the series is not clear at this point in the freshman season. Stay tuned and we will keep you informed of the series' fate.
Season 1 recap
American Gothic has concluded airing its freshman season on September 7, 2016. The two-hour season finale drew an audience of 2.55 million viewers, which is not particularly impressive compared to the two premiere episodes that were viewed by 3.5 million viewers. Spooky, but not to the point of being scary, intricately detailed world of crime and high society is creatively and compellingly portrayed, yielding a cross-breed between thriller and soap. The final episode revealed the identity of the Silver Bells Killer accomplice, and the Hawthorne family is now the target. Series' creator and EP Corinne Brinkerhoff has unofficially stated that the second season of American Gothic is definitely in the works, but CBS has yet to confirm the renewal, so please stay tuned for an official statement.
Latest news
UPDATED October 18, 2016: Sorry, you fans who already grew attached to the Hawthorne family – unfortunately, CBS’ summer offering American Gothic is not fated to last beyond the freshman season due to its poor performance in the ratings department. The mystery family drama series averaged a meager 2.7 million viewers and a 0.5 demo rating, peaking at 3.6 million, which obviously below par by CBS standards, so the decision was made to cancel the show. Farewell, American Gothic, it’s too bad that your screen life was cut short.

Wr watch when we can and just because these so called rating aren't on the day every episode does not account for the fact that they do still get watched!

How are thes ratings calculated makes absolutely no sense, pay pr view yea yea no Wonder people start downloading torrents is pay pr you never know
But I'm glad I chose to give this one a shot!! I loved everything about it! CBS better be good to it's loyal viewers and at least give us a second season!! I can't imagine why not?!? (however, stranger things have happened :-? )
I hope that this will be a keeper for CBS and that they at least give it a chance of returning for a second season.
