Plot, cast and production info

BrainDead is a new US comedy / political thriller created by Robert and Michelle King (The Good Wife) and airing on CBS since June 13, 2016. The series is produced by the Kings, Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker and hails from Scott Free Productions, King Size Productions and CBS Television Studios. The freshman installment contains 13 episodes.

A federal employee Laurel Healy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) makes a discovery that is troubling to say the least – it turns out that many politicians are infected by extraterrestrial bugs who are literally eating their brains. This infection is what's responsible for the chaos that the political life is so full of, and the international alien conspiracy is threatening all of humanity. The cast also includes Danny Pino (as Senator Luke Healy (D)), Aaron Tveit (as Gareth Rider), Nikki M. James (as Rochelle Daudier), Jan Maxwell (as Senator Ella Pollack(D)), Johnny Ray Gill (as Gustav Triplett) and Tony Shalhoub (as Senator Raymond “Red” Wheatus (R))

Ratings and renewal potential

The series has a 7.4/10 IMDb score. The mix of genres is truly stupefying – with a bit of sci-fi, satire, suspense, and even a hint of romance thrown in. The horror aspect, however, is far from pronounced. The writing and the cast are praised and the reviews are generally positive. BrainDead premiered to 4.59 million viewers, but the viewership declined rather significantly – by the third episode only 3.29 million were tuning in. Most of the first season episodes are still ahead, so it is difficult to predict how it will fare in terms of a renewal. The premise is billed by reviewers as one that needs to be extended in order to last beyond the first season. Stay tuned for further news.

Season 1 recap

The 13-episode freshman season of sci-fi comedy series Braindead has concluded on CBS on September 11, 2016. The most important development portrayed the final part was that the brain-eating parasites were expelled from Red and others in Washington, D.C. The powerful season finale of the exciting series from Michelle and Robert King aired with an audience of 2.06 million viewers. This is a significant, over two-times decline from the series' launch viewership, which drew 4.59 million viewers to the small screen. There are rumors that if the show was to continue, the action would move to Wall Street, Silicon Valley, Hollywood, and other industry centers in various spots in the US. So will there be another season of Braindead? CBS has yet to make a decision on the fate of the sci-fi comedy series, so please stay tuned for the latest news.

Latest news

UPDATED October 18, 2016: Neither one of CBS’ summer newbies will make it to the second season. Both Braindead and American Gothic were canceled by the network in a sweeping decision. Braindead was originally conceived as at least a four-season arc, yet the devastating ratings made the network reconsider its plans. The freshman season premiered to an already disappointing 4.6 million viewers, and went out with merely 2 million for the final episode. It was clear that the sci-fi comedy is not going to last when its showrunners Robert and Michelle King moved on to another project, The Good Wife’s spinoff All Access. Farewell, Braindead.

I too would like to see a season two of this show. It was smart, funny, suspenseful, and highly entertaining. Something tells me that a show I like this much can't possibly be renewed for a second season (it's my favorite new show of the year), but my fingers are crossed.

Brilliant show.....just binge watched the entire season on Amazon (only place available in UK). I loved it, and my first reaction was to search the web to make sure a second season was coming my way. Very shocked that this is still in question...SEASON 2 MUST BE MADE! Even if only for the innovate funny way the episode recaps were presented. Come on CBS Execs, you've got a great show.....

This was the best show on TV this season. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Tony Shalhoub were simply great! The political humor was biting and on point. It would be hard to see how they could outdo themselves but I'd love to see them try.

Local political columnists are already writing and comparing local government issues with this show.
when I first watched, I was only reasoning that the Federal congress had been afflicted for the last 16 years!

This program has been a delight in a long summer of virtually nothing worth watching. I wasn't sure after the first episode if I wanted to continue, but I'm now at the point that I can barely wait for the next week to arrive. Fun & it keeps me guessing. Please bring us another season!

CBS please renew this program. It is the only thing I have faithfully watched all summer. Love the brilliant cast, clever story line and creative concept. It is a lily in a field of reality weeds. Bring it back next season, please.

My family and I are really enjoying this show! We get together every Sunday to watch. It's something fresh and original and very clever if you think about it. We're really hoping it gets renewed! Thanks

Braindead is a refreshing program and has sufficient diversity of sub plots to keep this viewer interested. I started watching because of Tony Shaloub, of whom I can never get enough. I believe the show suffered from bad timing and by moving it from Thursday (where it was up against Luther on PBS) to Sunday with virtually no notification to viewers. Braindead got a raw deal and deserves a second season at least so it can demonstrate how good it is.

I love this show! If you want it to renew, let CBS know by going to their feedback site, you can find it by going to cbs's main website and down at the bottom of the page click on broadcast feedback. If enough people write in, who knows, it might work...

Thanks for giving me something I can do to try to save this show. It's the highest quality program on CBS. It's funny, political satire done brilliantly. Tony Shalaub is a wonderful actor, with a quality and intelligent cast. Please don't take this show away, we need an alternative to mindless reality and game shows. CBS keeps Big Brother, a foolish reflection on CBS, yet we have to fight for this clever show.
