Series info and cast
An American sketch comedy television series Party Over Here has premiered on March 12, 2016 on FOX. Hailing from 2nd Man On The Moon, The Lonely Island and Kabiamo!, the series the first original live-action late-night show on Saturdays since 2010. The show was created and executive produced by Paul Scheer and the members of Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated trio The Lonely Island - Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone.
Short studio-filmed segments with live audience presence are mixed with sketch comedy shorts and touch upon all of the usual subjects – pop culture, love, politics, and whatnot. In 2014 Fox and The Lonely Island signed a development deal to work on the comedy project on the network's digital platforms.
Ratings and renewal potential
The 4.5 IMDb rating is not particularly impressive and does not necessarily incite serious hopes for renewal. The reviews note that although the series might have potential for development, as of now there isn't much going on besides the obvious gags. The competition is fierce in the late-night Saturday slot, and the critical consensus reads that the Byer, McKenna and Rich trio is not quite as engaging and sparkly as they need to be in order to become serious players on this stage. Fox's longtime attempts to gain a foothold in the late-night Saturday programming slate do not seem to be particularly successful with Party Over Here, so we will keep closely monitoring network announcements in order to keep you updated on the future of the comedy series.
Season 1 recap
The 10-episode freshman season of sketch comedy show Party Over Here has concluded on May 21, 2016. It would be an exaggeration to call it a success, and the review aggregator website scores reflect very clearly. The series scored a measly 3.6/10 on IMDb and 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has garnered mixed reviews, the kindest of which suggest a “mildly amusing” definition. Fox's late-night project did not work out as well as was planned, with obvious gags and jokes that mostly failed to take off. On the bright side, tribute is given to Fox for putting three female stars in the spotlight, which is not necessarily typical of the male-dominated stand-up comedy. It's not clear whether Fox would be willing to give the series room to grow, and renew it for another season, or it will be canceled following the freshman season. In any case, stay tuned, and we'll keep you informed.
