Basic information and concept

The primetime hypnotherapy game show You're Back in the Room has debuted on ITV in 2015. The program is produced by Tuesday's Child and executive produced by Karen Smith. Its current second series, consisting of four one-hour episodes, premiered on March 12, 2016. It is presented by Philip Schofield and stars Keith Barry.

The show participants are contending for cash prizes while being in an a state of induced hypnotic trance. The seemingly straightforward assignments become increasingly difficult as the hypnotic triggers interferes with the subjects' actions. The four rounds played out in each episode may increase the amount of the cash award earned by the participants, if they can overcome the hindrances.

Criticism and renewal prospects

The show has received consistent criticism from professional hypnotic therapists who claim that the series is fraudulent and that the presumably hypnotized subjects are merely acting. Other complaints have included the concern for the vulnerable subjects' psychological well-being after their appearances on the program.

The first series of You're Back in the Room has pulled in an audience of approximately 4 million viewers per week including delayed viewing, plus 0.8 million viewers on the TV3 simulcast airings in Ireland. International versions of the show have appeared in Australia, France, Colombia and Slovenia. The show seems popular and amusing enough, although the quality of entertainment is not particularly high, so we find it difficult to predict its future at this point. UPDATED October 8, 2016: In spite of fairly reasonable viewership numbers and the fact that the program has become an international hit and the format has spread globally, You’re Back in the Room has been axed by ITV after two series. The series has been criticized by professional hypnotists and garnered mixed reviews from the critics, so its future seemed questionable for a while. Additionally, Philip Schofield seems to have other projects that would deter him from continuing with the show, so it is time to bid farewell to the show.
