UPDATED October 4, 2017: Unfortunately, in the world of television critical acclaim means very little if the ratings fail to impress executives. This was the case with Underground which has been officially cancelled by WGN America after two seasons – there will be no Season 3 for the historical drama series. The decision to cancel was not driven solely by the eroded ratings, but the network’s strategic change to exit the original scripted business.

Series general info
A critically-acclaimed American television period drama series, Underground first came out on WGN on March 9, 2016. The history drama was created by Misha Green and Joe Pokaski and filmed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Several studios collaborated on the project – Weed Road Pictures, Safehouse Pictures, Get Lifted, Afemme, Wandering Rocks, Tribune Studios and Sony Pictures Television have all contributed. The current Season 2 of Underground premiered on March 8, 2017.
The storyline follows a group of slaves planning a daring and desperate 600-mile escape from a plantation in Georgia. The storyline revolves around Noah (Aldis Hodge), Rosalee (Jumee Smollett-Bell), and their fellow slaves carry their dangerous plan out in search of freedom. A secret Abolitionist couple aids them on their journey as the men and women are pursued by those who have to bring them back – or at least stop them, whatever the cost. Among the stars of Underground are Christopher Meloni, Alano Miller, Jessica De Gouw, Amirah Vahn and Marc Blucas.
Critical acclaim but sharply declining ratings
Season 2 of Underground was released on WGN on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 and like the debut season it is expected to consist of 10 episodes with the finale scheduled to air on May 10th. When the drama was launched last year, the 7.9 out of 10 IMDb score, the 74 Metascore and Underground's excellent viewership ratings have painted a very promising picture for the show’s future. Furthermore, following the buzz-worthy debut chapter, the show has been nominated for a number of awards. Considering all of the above, it feels very frustrating that the current second season of Underground is averaging just 0.6 million viewers, which is a massive 40% drop in the ratings.
