It’s over. Yesterday, the very last episode of the popular teen and family drama series Switched at Birth screened on the Freeform channel for the last time. The fifth and final season of the show premiered on January 31st and ran just ten episodes until the 11th of April 2017. The series is created by Lizzy Weiss, exec produced by Weiss, Paul Stupin, John Ziffren, Becky Hartman Edwards and Linda Gase, and produced by Pirates' Cove Entertainment, Suzy B. Productions and ABC Family Original Productions.
The series follows the lives of two teenagers in Kansas City who were switched at birth, as you might have guessed. One is living in an affluent family, the other in a blue-collar one. The show is the first to feature deaf and hearing impaired actors, with a number of scenes that were shot completely in American Sign Language.
Overall ratings and no season 6
Given that this fifth is also the very last season for Switched at Birth, it is somewhat surprising to see the viewing numbers fall the way they have. Originally drawing in over 3 Million viewers, the teen drama now barely hits the 0.5 Million mark and the overall ratings in the demographic 18-19 has dropped by over 50% in places. And that despite the fact, that the overall scores are still very strong, with 7.8 out of 10 stars on IMDb, a whopping 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and even a 4 out of 5 points from Common Sense Media. The Award winning show definitely had a lot going for it, but it had been decided, long before the fifth season aired on Freeform, that this would be the last series for Switched at Birth. This upset so many fans that they actually started a petition for it NOT to be cancelled. Unfortunately, last night was the end of Switched at Birth. At least for now.
