Series information and plot

Jericho is a period drama television series that premiered on ITV on January 7, 2016. It is created and written by Steve Thompson (Sherlock and Doctor Who), based on an idea by Dave Rampage, executive produced by Kate Bartlett and produced by ITV Studios.

The eight-episode series portrays the life in 1870's Jericho, a fictional shanty town that came into existence, survived and died while the Culverdale Viaduct was built as part of massive railway construction taking place at the time. The historical basis for the plot is loosely provided by the construction of Ribblehead Viaduct in North Yorkshire, England and the temporary settlements around it. Among the series' leads are Jessica Raine, Hans Matheson and Clarke Peters.

Criticism and chances of renewal

The series is criticized for its overly slow pace, lack of the grit and violence that was a trademark of the Railway era, and a general lack of visual credibility. However, apparently there are enough good points in Jericho, otherwise it would not have pulled in about 3.3 million viewers (15.5%) for the premiere episode, and 3 million (13.7) for the second one. There are the credible, likable characters, smart directing, a solid script and beautiful sights. Unfortunately, it airs opposite Death in Paradise, a hit no-pressure exotic-island detective story, which snatches away at least some of its viewers, since there's neither enough grit for the grit-lovers, nor is it relaxing enough of a sight to compete with a bit of sun that shines through the screen in Death in Paradise.

Latest news

UPDATED April 12, 2016: Jericho, the period Western drama series that seemed to have had reasonable potential did not manage to withstand its ratings battle with Death in Paradise. The series did not manage to have a strong enough impact and did not deliver the ratings that were expected in order to be renewed. In short, Jericho has been canceled and will not be returning to ITV. The amount of investments needed to make another series is not worth it due to the low ratings.

It is obvious who killed Davey but a second season would have been nice to wrap up all the loose ends.

Just checked this out of the Midtown Manhattan library branch thinking it was one DVD. But I watched all 8 episodes and enjoyed it. I'm from NYC so can't quibble, like some critics, about what's authentic Yorkshire or not, but this was an engaging series. Why not at least do one final Episode 9 to wrap it up? Sort of a shame. So many questions were left unanswered. Will Coates be brought to justice? Will Johnny and Charles's wife rekindle their fling? Will Charles survive?

Will someone please make a campaign on change.org? Such as "Bring Jericho back for a second season in 2018" Because I want Jericho to come back on TV. It can't just end on a unresolved cliffhanger forever. I want to know who shot Davey and I still do. And I also want to see that bridge finished.

Jericho is e beautifully made, well written and acted show. It is far better a show than Death in Paradise. ITV should stand by their quality shows, viewership would probably only grow for such a lyrical and moving drama, about an important part of UK's history. Too bad Netflix doesn't pick it up!

Really disappointed that there won't be a Series 2. I recorded Season 1 and then watched all 8 episodes in one hit and thoroughly enjoyed the show. We were left with a surprising cliffhanger and I couldn't wait to see what the next season would bring. Hope ITV reconsider their decision.

I am about ready to quit itv all together as you cannot count on them to follow through or even wrap up a series. They did the same thing with Home Fires...both excellent productions with great story line and cast. They left their very significant audience with totally cliffhanger endings with no satisfactory conclusions and closure, which is totally irresponsible abd unacceptable. There is so much [censored] on television and very little offered with substance and true appeal. Once again SHAME on itv.

I subscribed to Acorn JUST so I could see this show. I didn't regret it. I was instantly hooked and it quickly became one of my favorite series of all time. Jessica Raine and Hans Matheson are INCREDIBLE in this. I am so frustrated that great quality shows like this continue to get axed in favor of lower quality programming. How many crime dramas do we really need? I really hope they bring it back somewhere...somehow. I believe there are enough loyal fans to make it worth it. I would definitely buy every season!

Shame! We've just watched the final episode of series 1 here in New Zealand and we're looking forward to series 2. Can't believe it's been s[censored]ped. I'm so sick of reality shows filling our screens. Not enough violence? That says a lot about society today.

This is devastating news! Quality period films are incredibly rare. I live for this type of series. I just shared this series with my mother who sat down and watched all 8 episodes on a Sunday afternoon! I've told my friends about it and I'm sure as soon as word gets around it will soon be adored by millions over here in the U.S. You are targeting the wrong audience...
Bring it to America! Your ratings would go through the ceiling!

Can't believe this show has been cancelled. Thoroughly enjoyed the first series and my partner and I were looking forward to seeing how the loose ends were going to be tied up. Considering some of the run of the mill same old/same old shows ITV keep on recommissioning this was like a breath of fresh air.

I just watched this series and am so disappointed that there won't be a second season. I've watched Death In Paradise and although it's good the acting and script just do t compare to Jericho! I'm really bummed!

Typical of ITV cancel a program because there's not enough violence. One of the best period series.

To bad that some feel that 3.3 million viewers don't count for anything. We really enjoyed
the show and was nice to see not so much violence and junk that you see on so many of the other shows.
Hopefully ar least make enough shows to have things settled with various families etc.

I am very sad to see this drama canceled. I enjoyed it very much and wish you could reconsider. Period dramas are so much richer and serve to remind us of the sacrifices that have been made for progress. Did not miss the violence one bit.
