Series info and plot

Beowulf is a new British fantasy and adventure television series airing on ITV in the UK since January 3, 2016. The US premiere will take place on January 23, 2016. The series is created by James Dormer on the foundation of the Old English epic poem Beowulf, with re-imagined characters and an altered storyline. Some new characters and plot twists are also introduced. The program is produced by ITV Studios and consists of thirteen one-hour episodes. James Dormer, Tim Haines and Katie Newman serve as executive producers.

Reviews and potential renewal

Apparently, ITV has invested much hope into the series along with the 17 million GBP (Beowulf is one of the most expensive ITV projects ever), since the cast has been signed on with a five series contract. The first episode was simply mauled by critics, and has received mixed reviews from the viewers in the social media. Television critics have issues with the lack of character in the series' lead (Kieran Bew), the unsophisticated special effects, and the often pompous dialogue. Series like Beowulf usually take a bit of time to grow on the audience and disclose its full potential, so the show might turn out a winner despite the early-season disappointment for some. The premiere episode drew 2.6 million viewers to the screen, which is more than an 11% share of the pre-watershed audience, an average number for this time slot. Will the series blossom into something more watchable than now? It has a chance, and it certainly shouldn't be judged by the Game of Thrones standards, since it targets a younger audience and is suitable for family viewing.

Latest news

UPDATED April 14, 2016: Beowulf, ITV's fantasy drama series loosely based on the Old English epic poem, has been canceled by the network after the first series. Rumors of cancelation have already been out since February, when the series finale figure of 1.4 million was in. The ratings ultimately failed to satisfy the channel's expectations, since the concluding episode attracted just over a half of the audience of the premiere episode.

I'm late Coming to the show. I watched the whole series in one day . I really enjoyed it. I normally don't watch series just because of this results of cancelation. I get into a TV show and it's canceled. I never ever watch TV for this reason. I thought it was a movie when I started the first show. Once again I'm very disappointed in TV.
I will go back to only watching movies. TV suckes¡

I was upset that direct tv cancelled esquire. But honestly the only show I watched on the channel was Beowulf. I enjoyed the show and switched to direct tv because cox cable didn't offer esquire. That's how much I enjoyed the show. Very disappointed that they cancelled it. I still don't understand why they keep shoving "reality tv" down our throats but can keep good shows like Beowulf on the schedule. Just my opinion.

Whomever canceled the show is a bloody idiot!! The show was awesome. I'm so mad about this I'm thinking about getting a group of people together to protest against the cancellation!!!! It shouldn't have been canceled after one season. Some people barely watch tv anymore due to their everyday lives like children, school,or work. This is an infuriating tragedy!!!! UNCANCEL THE SHOW!! >:(

Loved this show from day 1. Someone has the ratings wrong as this is a great show. Keeps you glued to the TV, very interesting, love all the characters and the actors portrayal. They need to do another survey to the general population. Bring back the show.

Yes, Netflix could pick this up.

ITV officially misjudged the shows reception, then. The characters were solid. Love Slean's development, begrudgingly admire his mother and Beowulf's "lack of character"? I disagree. He may be a more mature and realistic hero for these times. But let's not measure ourselves against the Hollywood sleaze factory anyway, eh? They're not what they're cracked up to be.

Esquire and the producers of the show should have open a facebook page, that way they would find out how popular this show was. The ratings are inaccurate, for most of my friends were hooked on Beowulf. They should also consider that Nielsen only place their little boxes in private houses, ignoring the zillions of apartments. I had replay that show on demand more than I can count.

Very very disappointed it was canceled. Just finished watching the first one and loved it and was looking forward to the next one but NO you have to mess it up and ruin it for those who liked and enjoy watching.

Not surprised or disappointed by this decision. I stuck with the first series - wanting something different from Game of Thrones and hoping for improvement but it never materialised. The writing was weak, the acting was wooden and I didn't feel any emotional connection with any of the characters. Ed Speleers (whose pout and hairstyle were the real stars of the show) should have stayed below stairs at Downton Abbey and whilst Kieran Bew tried very hard to be Aragorn, he's no Viggo Mortensen...

This is sad to hear, the storyline was great but needed more explanation in the beginning. I had strong hopes for Season 2, however this is all about money and I guess the super powers decided they would rather pay the cast for 5 years then let the people decide after a few seasons. I love the character Beowulf. Why anyone would compare to Games of Thrones is beyond me. Two different casts and storyline. Lets hope for a miracle for season 2

I enjoyed this show and am quite upset it has been cancelled. It is hard to believe that the majority of people would prefer to watch the incest, gore and porn in Game of Thrones. Are our minds so deep in the gutter now? Do broadcasting companies have zero moral standards now?

As too be expected the rich people making decisions based on them getting more rich they don't realise not everyone has access to watch the shows when they are airing they forget real people work all different shifts and can't watch while they are counting there stupid ratings. And half of us can't afford the channels they come on they should blame satellite tv com. And cable for no one watching.

The good ones always get cancelled and then they are replaced with pieces of [censored] that go for years. Especially these ridiculous REALITY TV SHOWS on television these days are a joke. Stranded on islands trying to survive, the Bachelor, the Bachelorette, Dancing with the stars, Who has talent, my kitchen rules and master chef cook offs, bidding on unclaimed storage garages, people living in swamps or gearing up for the end of the world, big brother, survivor, the Voice etc and the Kardashians!!! I've never watched a Kardashian episode ever!! Television has turned to utter sh!t these days that I simply just turn it off again because there's reality TV shows everywhere and nothing new to capture the audiences attention. Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are the best. You want a good TV series, kill off your main characters as the series goes on with twists and turns to keep your audience at the edge of their seats!!
