UPDATED September 3, 2017: Little did the sci-fi drama’s fans knew when they were watching the Season 3 finale on August 25th that they were actually seeing the series finale. In a very surprising move, the SyFy network has made a decision to cancel Dark Matter after three installments – there will be no Season 4 for the show. The decision is disappointing considering the fact that the ratings have been solid and stable, with the season 3 finale delivering 0.7 million viewers, on par with the previous chapter.

As of today and currently in its third season, the overall ratings for Dark Matter are as strong as ever with 7.5 out of 10 stars on IMDb, a solid 8.4 out of 10 stars on TV.com and an approval score of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes (with 87% of viewers actually liking it). The third season so far still draws in steady viewing figures with an average of 0.58 Million viewers per episode and receiving a 0.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Surprisingly, Dark Matter has not yet been renewed. If we go just by these figures, then the chances are pretty good for that to happen, because in comparison other Syfy series were already renewed with far less successful numbers.
Basic info and storyline
Created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, and produced by Prodigy Pictures, Dark Matter is a Canadian science fiction television series that airs on the Space channel in Canada and SyFy in the U.S. The series is based on an eponymous comic book and follows a crew of astronauts who wake up on a spaceship with no memories of who they are. Season 1 of Dark Matter premiered in June 2015 and the second installment debuted on July 1, 2016, with season three following on June 9th, 2017.
The series begins when a crew of six people wakes up aboard a starship only to find out that not one of them remembers where they are, how they got there, or what their names are. They name themselves One through Six and begin to try and figure out what happened to them. Working together may present a problem, since no one knows each other and any one of the six can turn out to be a traitor.
