Summary and storyline
The Grinder is a new American legal comedy TV series that’s shot with a single camera and stars Fred Savage (The Wonder Years) and Rob Lowe (Parks and Recreation). Created by Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, the series debuted on FOX on September 29, 2015.
Dean Sanderson, Jr. (Rob Lowe) once starred in a legal drama series called The Grinder, but when the series ended he returns to his hometown of Boise, Idaho. Living with his lawyer brother Stewart (Fred Savage), Dean decides that his experiencing practicing law on TV is enough to join the family law firm. In the first episode of season 1, viewers see Dean assist Stewart in a case that involves a couple wrongfully evicted from their home.
Critical response and renewal hopes
Fox initially picked up The Grinder for 13 episodes, by October 25, 2015 it has ordered another six scripts, and eventually extended the series for a full season with a total of 22 episodes. While the show has seen a slight decline in ratings, it still averages 3.55 million viewers with mostly positive critics reviews. It boasts an incredible 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 71 out of 100 on Metacritic. So is all this attention enough to guarantee a renewal of The Grinder season 2? It’s not quite clear. The show will take a mini break, returning with new episodes in December. If the ratings stay high, fans may indeed see a comeback for another season.
Latest news
UPDATED December 22, 2015: Episode 9 of the debut season of The Grinder was broadcast on the FOX network in the US on December 1, 2015. The show is at the moment on a Christmas break. With just four episodes left, the sitcom is scheduled to continue on FOX on January 5, 2016. With an average viewership at around 3.5 million people, the show will most likely get a second chance.
UPDATED May 14, 2016: Unfortunately, the Fox network has axed both of its new Tuesday night sitcoms – Grandfathered and The Grinder. The Rob Lowe fronted comedy series opened rather strong last September with almost 5 million viewers, but the ratings continued to slide down as the season progressed. The final episode on May 10, 2016 has managed to attract just 1.6 million viewers, bringing the average viewership for the freshman series to just 2.2 million households. Considering such unsatisfactory numbers, it is easy to understand the network’s decision not to move forward. The news was also confirmed by the lead actor on his Twitter page.
Thank you for watching and supporting @Grandfathered I'm sorry it's over but I feel lucky to have been a part of it! https://t.co/QqVgY63xBM
