CBS has granted a direct-to-series order for "Watson," a medical drama set to air during the 2024-25 broadcast season. The show, created by Craig Sweeny (known for "Elementary"), is a collaboration between Aaron Kaplan's Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios. Morris Chestnut is not only slated to play the lead role but also serve as an executive producer, drawing inspiration from Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
Anticipating the series pickup, CBS and CBS Studios have recently secured Chestnut as the lead and appointed Larry Teng as the director and executive producer for the initial episode, signaling the path to an official greenlight.
Meanwhile, "The Pact," a project from the CBS/NAACP Production Venture, is following a distinct timeline. It remains in development, having added a supervising writer just before the onset of the WGA strike. The show is expected to progress to a writers' room in the coming days.
Described as a medical series with a robust investigative core, "Watson" offers a contemporary take on one of history's most renowned detectives, Sherlock Holmes. The narrative shifts his focus from solving crimes to unraveling medical mysteries in a universe where Holmes has been declared deceased—an element reportedly intended by Conan Doyle in "The Final Problem."
In "Watson," set a year after Sherlock Holmes' demise at the hands of Moriarty, Dr. John Watson (played by Chestnut) resumes his medical career by leading a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. However, Watson's past resurfaces as Moriarty and Watson embark on crafting their own chapter in a story that has captivated audiences for over a century.
