Anime genre appeals to many these days and there are so many different styles out there that this genre definitely deserves its very own platform. To someone, who doesn’t really watch these kinds of shows, anime series may seem like animated comic book-style characters, but that is not necessarily a bad thing at all. What is obviously important with any kind of television series is the premise that it is at the very least entertaining and well made. Now, this is the part where the critics are split right down the middle. Some call this new Netflix Original the greatest anime in 2017, which is also mainly attributed to the incredibly talented cast involved in this project. Others call it lame and bland and not entertaining at all, claiming that this new series has no direction and no meaning. The overall ratings are extremely far apart as well, where the anime scores a decent 5.9 out of 10 stars on IMDb, but then barely gets 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix never reveals any viewing figures, so for now we literally have to just sit and wait and see what will happen over the next few weeks. After all, Neo Yokio only just premiered yesterday, so stay tuned and we will keep you informed of everything that’s happening and a possible season 2 renewal announcement.

General information and cast

Created and executive produced by Ezra Koenig in collaboration with Nick Weidenfeld and Alexander Benaim, the brand new adult comedy animation Neo Yokio premiered on the streaming giant Netflix on September 22nd, 2017 with six 24-minute episodes for its very first season. The Netflix Original hails from the production companies Friends Night, Studio Deen, Infinite Elegance and MOI Animation and boasts an incredible voice-cast with big names such as Jaden Smith, Jude Law, Susan Sarandon, Jason Schwartzman, Tavi Gevinson, Desus Nice, The Kid Mero and even Steve Buscemi and Stephen Fry. Hend Baghdady and Angela Petrella serve also as executive producers.

Neo Yokio is pretty much the anime version of New York City, where its adverse labyrinth of cultural and architectural innovation is very much at the forefront of the global fashion industry and the financial sector. In this city lives Kaz Kaan, who is currently trying to overcome his breakup from his ex-girlfriend. Kaz Kaan is also the youngest “magistocrat” – a group of pink-haired demon slayers – who were the ones who liberated the city. Whilst the young Kaan would rather go out shopping and play field hockey, his aunt Agatha tries to keep him on his demon-slaying duties. As this is an anime, there are also Kaz’s faithful sidekick and robotic mecha-butler Charles and his best friends Lexy and Gottlieb as well as an arch-rival, which happens to be Neo Yokio’s number one and most eligible bachelor – Arcangelo.
