UPDATED August 16, 2017: To our dismay, the verdict from Netflix is in – their new original drama series Gypsy has been cancelled and will not be back with Season 2. Starring the award-winning brilliant actress Naomi Watts, the psychological drama failed to impress critics and viewers. Many noted that it lacked the tension and thrill they expected, while still praising solid performances from the leading duo of Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup.

General information and cast

On June 30th, 2017 a brand new drama thriller and Netflix Original called Gypsy hit our screens, when it premiered on the streaming giant with ten episodes. Created by Lisa Rubin, the show is produced by Universal Television and Working Title Television and executive produced by Tim Bevan, Liza Chasin, Eric Fellner, Sean Jablonski, Andrew Stearn, Sam Taylor-Johnson and the amazing Naomi Watts, who also plays the lead role in this new drama series, the egotistic psychiatrist Jean Holloway. Her husband Michael Holloway is played by Billy Crudup. Sophie Cookson, Karl Glusman, Poorna Jagannathan, Brooke Bloom and Lucy Boynton also star in this strong lineup.

The premise for Gypsy seems quite straight forward - a rather bad therapist gets too involved with her clients and ends up cheating on her husband. As this is a psychological thriller, we get to follow the therapist running a successful practice in Manhattan. On the surface, it seems that Jean as a dream life, who has it all, but then we get to see, how she develops very intimate and illicit relationships with the people in the lives of her patients. It becomes very obvious that Jean has certain egotistic and selfish desires she would like to pursue and which very much jeopardize her career, as the borders between her profession and her personal fantasies become blurred. It’s very clear that following down this path will come at a very high price, not just for herself, but for everyone around her.

Overall ratings and a possible season 2

Netflix Originals are usually synonym with very successful and fantastic television series promising an amazing, exciting and engaging viewing experience. The kind where you want to draw the curtains, turn off the answer machine and binge watch an entire series until the very end without stopping – simply because it’s so good, you can’t stop! However, in the case of Gypsy Netflix might have dipped their toes into some cold water, because the overall reaction to this new series isn’t positive at all. Many viewers and especially some critics complain about the fact that those ten episodes of Gypsy are tedious to watch and that the series seems to be nothing but a tease without actually coming to any conclusion or answering any questions. On the other hand, there are others, who deem the series as the hottest thing on television right now, because of the sexual nature and the illicit lesbian scene with Watts. As of today, the overall ratings literally split into all different directions, where over 1400 viewers rate Gypsy with a decent 7.2 out of 10 stars on IMDb so far, but then Rotten Tomatoes puts the slammer on by only giving it a dismal 27%, which is very low indeed for such a high caliber series. TV.com sits undecided slap bang in the middle with 5.1 out of 10 stars. At this point it is almost impossible to predict, whether Netflix will keep this new Original going for another season or if they will ax it after this first installment without further notice. The one thing that Gypsy has going for it is the insane hype right now and all the incredible attention – negative or not – which obviously drives up viewing figures and with that, ultimately secures a possible season 2 for Gypsy. Stay tuned!
