On February 15th, 2017 a brand new docu series called Hacking The Wild hit our screens on the Science Channel with six episodes. Produced by Ample and executive produced by Jerry McNutt, Philip Lott and Ari Mark, we get to follow Andrew Quitmeyer, Tech PhD student and polyadventurer, who tries to find ways to basically combine nature and technology in a very constructive way. His work has been featured on plenty of multimedia platforms and outlets such as the educational PBS channel, NPR, Discovery Channel and even the Cartoon Network as well as Wired.

In a nutshell, Hacking the Wild is almost the same as hacking a computer, but in this case Quitmeyer tries to crack the code nature gives us. The show is loosely based on his previous work Hiking Hacks, where he built interactive electronic devices whilst being out there in the wilderness. Quitmeyer’s research into Digital Naturalism – yes that is a thing! - shows him bringing his technological knowledge and devices, basically a backpack full of wires, laptops and trackers, into creating survival tools, traps and alarms out in the wilderness, which can be on a lush tropical island or a swamp or a glacier.

Watching survival shows and people trying to survive in some foreign surrounding has very much become part of our reality TV culture. What makes Hacking The Wild that little bit different is the fact that Andy Quitmeyer choses a somewhat unique approach of scientific exploration by managing his situation from a completely different angle. This Award winning digital survivalist fights his way back to civilization with some wires and basic survival skills, so one would think that this is definitely worth watching. That is, if you are into that sort of thing. So far, the overall rating doesn’t show much interest into this show, with a mere 4.6 out of 10 stars on IMDb, which could be due to the fact that Hacking The Wild only draws in a very specific kind of audience, as it is literally technical and less dramatic worm eating, which is what we normally get when watching extreme survival shows. As of today, the Science Channel has yet to cancel or renew the series for another installment. Stay tuned and we will update you immediately when any announcements regarding Hacking the Wild Season 2 become available.
