New series – information and storyline
What do you do – as a normal human – when you suffer some kind of damages by a superhero or a supervillain or both? This NBC action comedy is the answer to this question and premiered February 2nd, 2017. The studios DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. and Ehsugadee took this project under their wing and the acclaimed mix of executive producers such as Dean Lorey (Arrested Development), Marc Buckland (My name is Earl), Ross Cavanaugh (Californication) and Len Goldstein (Heart of Dixie), amongst others, show all the more the incredible potential of the show.
Powerless is a unique combination of reality and a comic book life, where superheroes fight in epic battles with extremely dangerous villains – while they destroy Mr. Smith's garage or Mrs. Peter's House all together. And what are these normal people supposed to do in that scenario? Who will pay for all that damage caused, which obviously has to be somewhat severe, given the epic battles we are looking at?! Well, thankfully they can call Vanessa Hudgens in her role as – in other words – specialized insurance broker Emily Locke and her team at Wayne Security, who will offer a very different kind of products for regular humans, who fell victim to such reckless superheroes and villains. Others famous faces are Danny Pudi as Teddy, Christina Kirk as Jackie, Ron Funches as Ron and Alan Tudyk as Van Wayne.
Viewership and renewal potential
Since the start of Powerless back in February with 3.1 Million viewers, the show seems to have a steady audience of between 2.5 and 2.2 Million viewers each week and 0.81 in the 18-49 demographic. Originally the reception of this action comedy was very positive with ratings such as 7.5 out of 10 from IGN, but then the creator of the show, Ben Queen, left just after the pilot, which resulted in a complete overhaul of the series. This lost Powerless a few points, as the rating on Rotten Tomatoes went down to 5.36/10. Regardless of these changes, the overall consensus for the show is still very positive, as this premise has a lot of potential and Vanessa Hudgens in her role as Emily Locke is just generally considered as very charming and fun to watch. Other critics name Powerless as a very goofy take on the otherwise dark DC Universe. As for a second season – so far there are no confirmed details for a renewal or a cancellation just yet. And because everything is very much in the middle of the road, this decision could go either way.
