About the series
On January 12, 2017 Spike has launched a new game series Caraoke Showdown to hop onto the bandwagon with other successful celebrity singing programs like the Carpool Caraoke and Lip Sync Battle. The show hails from CORE Media Group and Spike TV and is executive produced by Tom Johnson, Alice Dickens, Peter Herschko, Howie Mandel and Brian Veskovsky. Craig Robinson (The Office) acts as the host for the half-hour episodes.
The program takes the passengers on a musical trip where they can win money by participating in different challenges. The singing competition rounds include guessing song titles, singing lyrics, and persuading strangers to get inside the karaoke van with them and sing along. The prizes range in amount from $500 to $2000 per round. Sometimes celebrities hitch a ride in the van, and closer to the end of every episode two passenger teams get together for a final face-off for the extra $5000.
Current season and future possibilities
The program has been described as Carpool Karaoke with games on top, yet it is in fact more like karaoke-meets-Cash Cab, the Discovery game show hosted by Ben Bailey inside a taxi cab. The contestants are far from being professional singers, and rhythm and pitch are not prerequisites for winning. Unlike other similar shows, Caraoke Showdown moves from city to city for the musical rides, and has already included New York and Las Vegas. Will the show find enough viewer support to carry it into another season? It's unclear at this point, but we will keep you informed regarding any network announcements on the fate of Caraoke Showdown.
