Series information and plot
A new fantasy adventure drama series was launched by NBC on January 6, 2017 with a back-to-back premiere. Emerald City is loosely based on the classic Oz book series by L. Frank Baum, and is produced by Shaun Cassidy Productions, Oedipus Productions, Mount Moriah and Universal Television. David Schumer, Shaun Cassidy, Matthew Arnold, Josh Friedman and Tarsem Singh serve as the executive producers. The freshman season received a ten-episode order, and no extension has been commissioned just yet as of early February 2017.
Dorothy Gale is a jaded 20-year-old nurse from Kansas transported to the Land of Oz and engaged in a perilous search for the Wizard. The narrative only resembles the classic original schematically and for a short while, until it goes off in a more gothic-looking and far more terrifying story. Enter a brooding Scarecrow, feral warrior Munchkins, a Wizard with murderous inclinations, and other unlikely incarnations of familiar characters.
Viewership and chances of renewal
Emerald City premiered to 4.49 million viewers, but went down to 2.83 million by the third week. The show is garnering mixed reception, with a score of 7.3/10 on IMDb and just a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers mostly find the show interesting and full of surprises, but there's some criticism of it lacking depth.
