Real Vikings Cancelled by History Channel — No Season 2

Series concept and production info

On November 30, 2016 Canadian historic docuseries Real Vikings (a.k.a. Real Vikings: The Age of Invasion) made its US debut on History, following the original premiere in Canada, which took place in the spring of 2016. The series hails from Take 5 Productions, is presented by actor Clive Standon and was filmed in Denmark. Kenton Vaughan, Peer D. Findlay and Rebecca Snow are the writers behind the show.

The factual program was inspired by the success of History's hit drama Vikings, and aims to provide a historic background to the popular adventure series. Test driving the ships attributed to the Vikings, exploring the roots of the semi-mythical figure of Ragnar Lothbrok, and other activities that take place right where the Vikings roamed in the past aim to shed some light on many aspects of Viking history, from their general motivation to the reasons behind their fearsome behavior.

Viewership ratings and chances of renewal

1.4 million viewers tuned in to see the series' premiere episode, which scored a 0.34 demo rating. Two weeks later the companion series has not lost many viewers since the premiere, drawing a steady audience of 1.1 million and a demo rating of 0.32, not in the least owing to the lead-in from the hit flagship show Vikings that immediately precedes it. It's difficult to predict the future of the show at this point, since even despite the strong ratings, there may not be much more historical information about Vikings that would interest the general public besides what is already being explored in the current installment.
