Please Like Me is an Australian television dramedy airing on ABC AU since 2013 and currently in its fourth series. It has received a shorter episode order than previous ten-episode installments, and is comprised of six half-hour episodes that premiered on November 9, 2016. It is created and written by Josh Thomas with Liz Doran and Thomas Ward and hails from Josh and John Productions and Pigeon Fancier Productions.
After Josh (Josh Thomas) breaks up with his girlfriend Claire (Caitlin Stasey), he unexpectedly comes to the realization that he is homosexual. His best mate Tom and his now ex-girlfriend attempt to support him through the process of coming to terms with his orientation. His depressed mother Rose (Debra Lawrance) and father Alan (David Roberts) also have to deal with accepting the change in their son.
Popularity and renewal potential
The show has garnered critical acclaim and won a number of awards, including Australian Writers Guild Awards and Australian Directors Guild Awards. It has a strong 8.3/10 IMDb score, which indicates a positive reception, and has been indulged with excellent critical and viewer reviews. Even though the main premise of the story is not a universally relatable one, the characters are well-rounded and evoke sympathy. Please Like Me airs with approximately over 100,000 viewers per episode, which is not an amazing number, but apparently enough to keep it going. The show has not been renewed for another round just yet, but a renewal is likely, and we will be sure to keep you up on the latest info.
Series 4 recap
On December 14, 2016 the 6-episode fourth series of Australian dramedy Please Like Me has completed its broadcast. The second season aired with average viewership of just over 0.2 million viewers, garnering critical acclaim and scoring two awards (Best Writing in a Comedy at Australian Writers Guild Awards and Best Editing in a Comedy at Australian Screen Editors Awards) along with a slew of nominations. The series four finale saw Tom and Ella move out of the house and eventually break up, while Claire and Josh have an emotional discussion about their relationship. Whether or not we will ever find out what's in store for the characters is not clear, since the show has not been renewed for a fifth series yet. UPDATED February 4, 2017: The critically acclaimed Australian dramedy Please Like Me has been canceled by ABC (AU), since, as the series creator and star Josh Thomas has announced in his Twitter note, the creative team had a sense of the show being complete by the end of the fourth series. The show was a hit with the critics, and garnered great reviews from the viewers, so the cancelation was not expected, yet here we are bidding farewell to Please Like Me. The show will remain available on Hulu, so you can enjoy the completed installments online.
