One of the most ambitious documentaries of the recent times, Years of Living Dangerously is an American series that initially premiered on Showtime in 2014 with nine episodes. The eight-episode second season was launched on October 30, 2016 on the National Geographic channel. The star-studded team behind the program includes EPs Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Cameron and Robert Palumbo and creators Joel Bach and David Gelber.
The series focuses on one of the most important issues in contemporary environmental discourse – the issue of global warming and its effects, such as extinction of various species, rising seas levels, climate change as well as the range of measures that may and should be taken by governments, corporations and regular people to combat the negative impact of such change. Weekly episodes are presented by concerned celebrities who investigate this crucial phenomenon. The current season roster includes Cameron, Schwarzenegger, Thomas Friedman, America Ferrera, Don Cheadle, David Letterman, Gisele Bundchen, Sigourney Weaver, and others.
Excellent reception and chances of renewal
Years of Living Dangerously has been extremely well-received by viewers and the critical community. It is unanimously hailed as an intelligent, poignant and clear exploration of global warming that resonates with the audience and may inspire some real changes. The 8.5/10 IMDb score and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series truly do the series justice. Unfortunately, the viewership ratings aren't very high, but as the executive producers note, rarely do environmentally-themed programs gather large audiences, so while everyone hoped for higher viewership, there is no surprise there.
