About the series
The Great Indoors is a new CBS sitcom that premiered on October 27, 2016, and received a full season 19-episode order three weeks after its debut. The series is created by Mike Gibbons, produced by Gibbons Bros., Shiny Brass Lamp Productions and CBS Television Studios and executive produced by Gibbons, Chris Harris, Andy Ackerman, Judd Pilot and John Peaslee.
Joel McHale stars as Jack Gordon, an adventure reporter whose days of field exploration are over when he is injured, and Roland (Stephen Fry), the publisher of the magazine where he works assigns him to manage the digital publishing department. He has a difficult time adjusting to the millennial crowd now under his management – nerdy Clark (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), social media specialist Emma (Christine Ko), and Mason (Shaun Brown), a hipster lumberjack who might have never actually been in a forest. It's not just the office life that requires some major getting used to on Jack's part, but aspects like modern dating puzzle him as well. Jack's best friend and owner of a local bar, Eddie provides him with poignant info on modern life that helps him deal with it.
Viewership, criticism and renewal potential
The series premiered with excellent viewership of 8.81 million, which declined somewhat to 7.33 million viewers by the fourth episode. The show's critical and audience reception is mixed, with average scores on the review aggregator websites, such as a 6/10 on IMDb and 44% on Rotten Tomatoes. Most of the criticism is based on the overreaching use of generational stereotypes, where both millennials and Gen Xers fall victim to flat, one-dimensional portrayal.
