About the show
On October 3, 2016 ABC has launched a new legal drama series. Created and executive produced by Liz Friedman and Liz Friedlander with Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper, Conviction hails from The Mark Gordon Company, Double Fried Productions and ABC Studios.
Hayes Morrison (Hayley Atwell), daughter of a former US President, is a lawyer who is blackmailed into leading a new Conviction Integrity Unit following her arrest for cocaine possession. Cases of wrongful convictions are investigated in an attempt to serve justice, in a case per episode format.
Lukewarm reviews and possibilities of renewal
The series premiered to 5.17 million viewers, a 0.9 rating and a share of 3, gaining another 3 million in delayed viewing. The viewership later slipped to an average of 4.4 million viewers for the three subsequent episodes. Conviction has not earned much praise from either the critics or the viewers, and while the concept is deemed intriguing, the execution is unrealistic, unoriginal and bland. Although Atwell’s performance is praised as a strong and credible lead, the series seems to try too hard to be hip, and does not deliver on its promises. Rotten Tomatoes grant it a 17% “rotten” rating, while IMDb reviewers find it a bit more appealing, with Conviction earning a 7.3 score there. The series may not see another season if the viewers remain this disappointed, but if it does become more satisfying, it may very well be renewed. Stay tuned, and we will inform you when any news are announced.
Season 1 recap
ABC's legal drama Conviction wrapped up its first season on January 29, 2017. Over the course of the freshman chapter the viewership declined significantly, dropping from 5.17 to 2.43 million viewers. The season finale left many unanswered questions standing, such as whether Maxine remained sober, whether Marty and Tess are sill in touch and what the story is with Frankie's lover. However, it's unclear whether the viewers will ever find out the answers to these questions. The network declined to extend the episode order from the initial thirteen, making it clear that its fate is not looking particularly optimistic, especially considering the mostly negative critical response. The show is still on the bubble, so please stay tuned for network announcements.
