UPDATED August 15, 2017: Created to specifically promote the CBS network’s digital streaming platform, All Access, the new spin-off of the hugely popular reality series Big Brother, Big Brother Over the Top has been cancelled after just one season – no Season 2 for the new show. At the same time, the network’s scripted shows, including The Good Fight, are doing pretty well.
About the series
On September 28, 2016 Big Brother: Over the Top began to stream exclusively online on CBS All Access. The new compound is equipped with 87 HD cameras and over a hundred microphones, and so the 24/7 recording of people’s lives continues. The show is part of an effort by CBS to attract new subscribers to its streaming service, in line with the upcoming The Good Wife spinoff and Star Trek: Discovery.
The first season ever of a Big Brother-themed show with a fall release date, it features thirteen houseguests and Julie Chen as the presenter. The series’ format is slightly modified from the CBS broadcast original, yet, of course, the main premise is the same – a group of people called HouseGuests lives in isolation in a compound, and its members get evicted each week, until only one remains and is awarded a prize of $250,000.
Current season format changes and chances of renewal
This program allows far greater viewer participation than the original show, and features a slew of new elements designed for its new digital audience. These are: a weekly recap episode, a live eviction ceremony, a quick rundown of the daily events available four times a week, safety ceremonies, live diary room sessions, weekly interviews with the evicted HouseGuests, and several other tweaks. Considering the booming success of Big Brother and the fact that without the new digital series fans would have had to wait until next summer for their reality show fix, we can be sure that the show is a ratings success and will continue further.
