Series’ storyline and cast

Midnight Diner – TOKYO Stories is a new Japanese drama series that became available for streaming internationally on Netflix on October 21, 2016. This live-action series is based on Yaro Abe’s very popular award-winning manga that has been around for nine years and sold almost 6 million copies worldwide. The first season is directed by award-winning director Joji Matsuoka and contains ten 30-minute episodes.

In the rushed modern world the Master (Kaori Kobayashi) opens up his tiny diner Meshiya at midnight and closes the doors at 7 in the morning. The menu is very short, but he makes it the rule to cook whatever his clients request. He soothes the visitors with his nostalgic comfort foods and conversation, and bonds with them as the patrons also form unexpected relationships among themselves. The cast also includes Joe Odagin, Reiko Kataoka, Koen Kondo, Bsaku Sato, Yutaka Matsushige, Mansaku Fuwa and Korean actress Go Ah-sung, among others. The food is just as important as the people, almost a character of its own, as is the meditative approach of the Master to cooking and to life in general. Renowned food stylist Nami Iijima is responsible for the magical meals served by the Master.

Popularity and renewal prospects

Aesthetically simple, yet extremely satisfying in more ways than one, the show became very popular in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea in the spring and summer of 2016, and now it is spreading its meditative approach to life beyond Asia. It is difficult to predict whether a second season of Midnight Diner – TOKYO Stories will be commissioned, so all fans can do is stay tuned for announcements from Netflix. Realistic at times. Except for the ghost episode lol. And the fact that everything always ends really nicely!

I hope there's a season 2 of this Netflix version.

One can only hope the other 4,seasons become available to all Netflix viewers. The show is new if you haven't seen it.

The show isn't new, and has been popular in Asia for a while. For some reason, Netflix season 1 episode one doesn't correspond to the first season of the show in Japan. There were already 4 seasons aired before this.

Netflix is showing season 4. There is a movie that follows on from this, three previous seasons and an older movie too. I love this show. Managed to see it all.
