Woody Allen’s television project
On September 30, 2016 the first ever Woody Allen television project Crisis in Six Scenes began streaming on Amazon in the United Staes, the UK and Germany. The highly anticipated six-episode comedy series was created, written and directed by the master, and, as with many of his films, he also stars in the show. Amazon Studios and Gravier Productions are behind the show and Erika Aronson is the executive producer.
Crisis in Six Scenes focuses on a suburban family in the 1960s United States – neurotic writer Sidney Munsinger (guess who plays this part in a Woody Allen movie) and his wife, marriage counselor Kay (Elaine May) – as they encounter a visitor who changes their lives completely. Miley Cyrus, Rachel Brosnahan and John Magaro round out the star-studded main cast.
Negative response and renewal prospects
The show’s been met with mixed to negative reviews, even from Allen fans. Among the numerous complaints are the fact that the narrative is oversimplified, the comedy is not funny, and the resolution anti-climactic. It almost seems unimaginable that any Woody Allen project has a 21% Rotten Tomatoes rating, but that’s exactly the number that Crisis in Six Scenes has managed to scrounge up. The 6.7/10 IMDb score instills some hope, but the critics are completely ripping the show apart. In May 2016 Allen has already revealed that there will only be one season of the show, and while it is impossible to be completely sure, ending the series may be for the best with reception this poor. Stay tuned for further news on the fate of the series.
