Series info and storyline
Mary + Jane is a new comedy series created by Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan that debuted on September 5, 2016 on MTV. The nine half-hour episodes are executive produced by Kaplan, Marcus Blakely, Guymon Casady and Jill McElroy and produced by MTV, Television 360 and Snoop Dogg’s Merry Jane.
The series portrays two stoner friends and roommates, Jordan (Scout Dunwood) and Paige (Jessica Forte) trying to build a booming pot delivery business from scratch in LA. They set up a delivery app, which proves to be a very successful step, but encounter many obstacles on their difficult way to prosperity. They do their relaxed best, look for love when they’re not playing entrepreneurs, and have fun along the way.
Reviews, viewership and renewal prospects
Most of the reviewers note Mary + Jane’s attempt to reinvent Comedy Central’s Broad City, and also note its failure to do so. The show seems to be trying a bit too hard to be trendy, funny and free-spirited, and it comes out feeling forced. However, the premiere episode did rather well, scoring 0.458 million viewers and a 0.22 demo rating. The following week viewership numbers remained just about the same, edging up to 0.26 and 0.465 million. The concept of the show and the lead performances are genuinely praised, while the dialogue quality is mostly criticized. The issue of renewal has not been brought up yet, and the series’ prospects aren’t immediately clear. Mary + Jane currently has a 4.9/10 IMDb score, and perhaps the creators can crank up the dialogues to move the show full steam ahead to very feasible success. Please stay tuned and we will inform you when MTV makes a decision on the show’s future.
Latest news
UPDATED February 18, 2017: A 10-episode debut installment of the MTV’s comedy series Mary + Jane concluded airing in November 2016, and the network has just announced that it has opted not to renew Mary + Jane for Season 2. The show has delivered 0.37 million viewers per episode in its debut run, which is actually on par with Scream that received a third season order, and higher than 0.2 million viewers for Loosely Exactly Nicole that also got the boot. The feedback from critics and viewers was rather negative, and probably that has tipped the scale for the network’s executives. The future of Sweet/Vicious is still undecided.
