Vice Principals Canceled: HBO Says No to Season 3

When Vice Principals was commissioned by HBO for 18 half-hour episodes, it was already planned right from the start to only run Vice Principals for two seasons. This is following a somewhat “new” trend to keep things compact like a mini-series. The good thing is that such plans can always be changed around, should the need arise to bring back such short running television series. However, at this point, Vice Principals will end after the second season. In an interview, the show’s creator McBride stated that they literally just wanted to “make a very long movie”. With overall approval ratings of 7.8 out of 10 stars on IMDb this is very much a shame, as the show seems to be very popular with viewers. However, critics are not too keen on the mini-series and only rate it a modest 3/5 on Common Sense Media, 56% on Metacritic and 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, which are all rather middle-of-the-road and not very indicative of anything really. So, maybe the decision not to renew Vice Principals for Season 3 wasn’t such a bad one after all.
Series information and storyline
The HBO Original comedy series Vice Principals premiered on July 17th, 2016 for its very first chapter and returned on September 17th, 2017 for its last and final second season with brand new episodes. It was created by Danny R. McBride and Jody Hill, executive produced by McBride, Hill, David Gordon Green, Jonathan Watson and Stephanie Laing and produced by Rough House. This is not the first time McBride and Hill were involved in a short and successful HBO project, since their Eastbound and Down ended after 29 episodes.
McBride and Walton Goggins are two high school principals, Neil Gamby and Lee Russell, competing for the top position. The first one is ill-tempered and unpopular, and the second is no better – a racist and a sociopath, so the retiring principals entrusts Dr. Belinda Brown (Kimberly Herbert Gregory) with the job. The two VPs conspire to bring Brown down by ruining her reputation. Their miserable attempts are chronicled in the dark humor comedy.
