Series info and format
The Great Australian Spelling Bee is a reality competition series presented by Grant Denyer and Chrissie Swan, produced by Shine Australia and airing on Ten Network. The show originally premiered in 2015, and has launched its second season on July 17, 2016. Chris Edmund stars as pronouncer. The contestants are children, but the show is enjoyed by both adults and children. The number of spellers has decreased from 28 to 18 from the first series to the second.
The show follows the classic spelling bee format and adds some interesting twists – the show requires contestants to spell words of various degrees of difficulty, with the winner rewarded by a major scholarship, and a number of other prizes. There are individual challenges such as speed spell, flash cards, spell check, spelling bee, and team immunity challenges, such as letter by letter, show and spell and team spelling bee.
Viewership decline and chances of renewal
The first series of the show became a hit for Ten, with 0.921 million viewers tuning in to the series premiere, and an audience of 0.76 million for the finale. It has garnered excellent reviews, scored nominations for Logie Awards for Best Presenter and Best Personality on Australian Television, and was easily renewed for a second installment. The second season kicked off with much lower viewership of just 0.456 million, which led to the show being moved from its Sunday time slot into a less desirable Saturday time from the fifth episode on. If the unfortunate trend in the current season’s viewership continues, there is a big question regarding the show’s future. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you informed.
