Series' storyline and production info

A brand new BBC One supernatural horror drama series, The Living and The Dead has premiered on June 28, 2016. It was created by Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah, with the latter also the writer for the series. The two executive produce alongside Faith Penhale and Katie McAleese. BBC America, BBC Cymru Wales, Monastic Productions and Lookout Point Ltd. are behind the production.

The Living and The Dead is set in the English countryside in the 1890s, when the protagonist, Victorian psychologist Nathan Appleby (Colin Morgan) moves to his recently inherited family estate and is forced to confront unexplainable and disturbing events. Charlotte Appleby (Charlotte Spencer), Nathan's wife, is a photographer who assists him in reviving the farm. They encounter possessed people, ghosts, and other instances where Nathan attempts to help, but begins to have visions of his own.

Viewership ratings and renewal potential

The series premiere drew just short of 4 million viewers, which is quite a solid debut. IMDb viewers grant it a 7.6/10 score, praising its well-crafted visuals, quality acting, solid characters, unexpected twists and compelling storyline, which picks up pace past the mid-season point. Some criticism for being generic really doesn't concern the fans, who are far numerous than the critics. At this point in the series the show seems a likely candidate for renewal, but no announcements have been made by BBC One just yet, so please stay tuned and we'll keep you informed of the fate of The Living and The Dead.

Latest news

UPDATED August 13, 2016: Thriller drama The Living and the Dead will not be returning to BBC One with a second series. The network has chosen not to continue with the program with a standard formulaic explanation – due to the necessity of making room for new series in the next programming season. The viewership ratings were reasonably high and made the show seem worthy of renewal, so the reason for the cancelation must lie elsewhere. Farewell, The Living and the Dead.

So very disappointed that season 2 has been cancelled. I actually thought to myself after watching season 1 "yes finally, a show that is a bit different than all the other dreary, predictable, boring stuff" I actually got excited and loved the costumes, acting and story line which kept me intrigued and wanting more. There is nothing and I mean nothing like it so will now not watch anything on BBC First again. It takes courage and guts to show / air something alittle different as not all viewers like the mainstream stuff. Just so disappointed.

My sister says she has watched a second series of this (or was there a pilot)? She said in the series it explained about his little boy. Needs some explanation as you never hear about the boys mother. Can anyone verify if a second one or prequal went ahead

I just now watched the first 6 episodes. I loved it and of.course it is being.cancelled probably for yet another idiotic reality show. Not something intriguing different and.just leave viewers hanging. No wonder everybody is dropping cable and going with streaming.

Such a good series. Well acted, intriguing and spooky. Really disappointed the BBC gave it a cliff hanger ending and then cancelled series 2, Would have been better to finish the story properly. Shame.

I am utterly shocked and dismayed that series 2 of The Living And The Dead has been cancelled!! I got so hooked on the shows that I would end up staying up till the wee hours watching them and have a hard time turning off the t.v.! That doesn't ever happen to me, but that's how VERY MUCH I love this show. I was so so looking forward to series 2 and seeing what awesome thrills would occur.... but then I found out that it was cancelled and I literally felt like crying. Can we start a letter writing campaign to change this outcome? Count me in on that endeavor!! Come on BBC listen to your viewers and bring back a show that resonates with so many people (as is evidenced here). Pretty please....

This was indeed a brilliant show that stood out amidst a lot of the [censored] that the BBC push out under the guise of "entertainment". Unfortunately all the while the BBC is allowed to take a licence fee they will remain arrogant and smug. Those who pay the licence fee hold the whip handle so CHANGE CHANNEL and take down the BBC ! Maybe if their viewer numbers significantly decrease they will actually try and provide us with what we want and NOT with what the corporation thinks we should have!

Shocked at no series 2. This is the last time I watch a series. Its now the second one that has left viewers not knowing what happens next. Never again.

Very anoted that season 2 has been cancelled. As a licence fee payer I think the BBC should give a valid reason for cancelling.

I'm watched the tv series from my home in Poland, and i very confused that there dont be season 2, in my opinion this tv series could be one of the greatest show in history of tv, and its very not cruel to end this story in this moment. Who can answer the fans what happen with Lara's car back in 19 century, what happen to Lara and Gabriel, what is going about last scene with Nathan. BBC dont do it to fans of this tv series, give this production a one more chance, and even if you want to quit this tv series, dont make that kind of cliffhanger.

This show was the only reason I switched BBC on.,, TV is truly becoming [censored] finally a good show than they shut it down.
Very disappointing the living and the dead should come back for sure.

I loved this show. It finished like it was going to continue and now I have read it is not. How can you finish with "Nathan, why did you kill you wife" and then not have a 2nd series to explain. Frustrating and extremely disappointed.

So, SO devastated that there is no renewal! First "Penny Dreadful" and now this!!! Honestly BBC, you wouldn't recognise a great series if it bit you on the proverbial. At least "The Fall" is coming back later this year.

We really loved this show, quality tv and something different to the reality fare. Thought it was set up nicely for Season 2. BBC what are you thinking not going ahead with more episodes?! Really disappointed.

An atmospheric triumph of a series, with a great number of across-time twists which need explaining in (at least ) a second series. How can the BBC leave so many people unfulfilled?

This was a really brilliant show, same as the crimson field, why do bbc one make a series just to cancel them? Are they trying to alienate the people who watch their channel, most people don't want reality TV but good solid shows with real actor, bbc for the greater good, STOP with all the cancelling after season 1 on your shows.

This is typical of a lot of TV companies including BBC of late, run a series then cancel even though there is a decent sized fan base. Personally approximately 4 million viewers on a Sunday night is pretty good I would have thought, these companies can not continue to think they will get consistently high ratings on all programs there are just too many channels for that I would have thought. Its getting to the point where my wife and i wonder whether to watch a new series in case this very thing as happened to 'The Living and the Dead' occurs again. Very disappointed.

I cannot believe the BBC have done this! Everyone I have spoken to was hooked on this series and the cliffhanger ending means we require answers. For goodness sake BBC rethink your decision and if not I really hope one of the other channels picks this up and we are delighted with more series. What a thoughtless thing you have done, shame on you for treating your faithful viewers so badly.
