Brilliant TV series from an acclaimed film director

The Get Down is a Netflix original web series that became available for streaming on Netflix on August 12, 2016. It’s an American musical drama television series that was created by Shawn Ryan (Mad Dogs, The Chicago Code), directed by acclaimed Australian director Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge!) and hails from the Sony Pictures Television production studio. The series is executive produced by Stephen Adly Guirgis, Marney Hochman, Thomas Kelly, Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Shawn Ryan and Paul Watters.

Storyline and cast

Baz Luhrmann calls the new TV show "saga of the 1970s New York”. The story focuses on punks from the South Bronx who have launched a musical revolution that has spread beyond the city to the rest of the world. For Luhrmann, New York of the 70s is not the best place on earth, where people are burdened by financial difficulties, gloomy and bitter. At that time, Bronx teens begin changing the musical landscape of the city. They literally take the city by storm, armed only with spray paint, loud slogans and spontaneous dancing. They are slowly moving from the slums where they grew up to the bohemian Manhattan, conquering the area around the newly erected twin towers of the World Trade Center and trendy clubs Studio 54 and CBGB. The Get Down is essentially a chronicle of how during the time of national bankruptcy a new musical culture was born: disco, hip-hop and punk. The new drama series stars Jaden Smith, Shameik Moore, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Skylan Brooks (Southpaw), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and more.

Second season and renewal potential

A 6-episode debut season of The Get Down came out on Netflix on Friday, August 12, 2016 at 12:01am PST. The second season, subtitled as “Part 2” was released worldwide on April 7, 2017 and consisted of 5 episodes. The musical drama boasts a very high approval score of 8.5 out of 10 on IMDb and has been also critically acclaimed since its launch, scoring 4 award nominations and winning 2016 African-American Film Critics Association Award. According to the award-winning director Luhrmann himself, he has been working on this ambitious project for 10 years now. This is Baz’s first musical drama project since the release of his critically-acclaimed feature film Moulin Rouge back in 2001. The first two seasons took place in 1977 and 1978, respectively, so as Netflix is yet to make its call about Season 3 of The Get Down, we are surely hoping to be transported to 1979 soon.

This has been the best show i have ever seen and Netflix should be proud to have promoted this series as it reaches all ages and races. i'm a 45yr old single mom and love the fact that it touches on all hopes and dreams of young and old. I am so excited to continue watching and hope it releases it's next season sooner than 2017. Excellent flow and combinations of all aspects life offered during those times of the 70's of dreams, politics, friendships and love. It is a remarkable series that represents truth and honesty so be very proud of bringing this view of those times back to life! Absolutely wonderful in every way!

I absolutely Love this miniseries, I've told so many people about it, and The Get Down MUST come back for season 2....I have to say I watched all 6 episodes back-to-back. Everything seems so Authentic, New York and the state it was in in the late 70's the disco era, the blackout, the Burroughs, the young gangs at that time the cinema photography seems so real to life, I can't wait to see what’s going to happen to Ezekiel, Mylene & Shalo next. This is my era but I had no idea about a lot of the history of Afrika Bambata, Cool Herc or Grandmaster Flash.

I thoroughly enjoyed all the episodes. I grew up in that era and grew up with disco and motown. It's right up my alley. My mother lived in Detroit when that city burned. One can easily relate to the show. The characters are great and it gives you a great feel for what was happening in NJ at that time. I hope it continues. I turned my 17 year old and her boyfriend onto it too. We were so disappointed it had so few episodes. Release the other episodes please.

This could possibly be THE best programme since the Marvel sets. I didnt grow up in New York, but this is an informal history lesson of New York itself; not just the Hip-Hop scene. Critics carry no weight with me. Every episode is so balanced;I cant wait like most viewers, but we have no Damn choice, patiently waiting.................Stranger Things...Luke Cage.........Iron Fist...........Punisher............tick tock....

The get down is great. I enjoyed every episode. When you grow up in that era and in NYC, you have lived though the experiences examined in the get down. Bring the show back sooner than later.
