First original Japanese series

Netflix continues on with it now massive global expansion. A few more international projects are currently in production in Great Britain, Germany and Brazil, and the internet television company has just released its first-ever Japanese television series. Titled Hibana (“Spark” in English), the new series is done in Japanese with English subtitles for international viewers. It was made available on Netflix globally on June 2, 2016.

Hibana is a semi-biographical story of a comedian named Tokunaga, who wants to become an apprentice to a seasoned and very popular comedian Kamiyo. The new Japanese drama TV series is based on the best-selling novel penned by Naoki Matayoshi. The book is based on the personal experiences of the author, who is a successful comedian in his own right, and in 2015 the novel was awarded the Akutagawa Prize, and immediately became an international bestseller. It allows readers to take a look behind the scenes of the intricate world of comedy. Spark stars Kento Hayashi, Kazuki Namioka, Mugi Kadowaki, Masao Yoshii, Hideaki Murata and others.

I loved it. In spite of its weirdness it was comfortably awkward and the philosophy, Japanese ideals and thought showed true through the story line and their struggles. The amount of personal sacrifices for ideals such as loyalty were breathe taking, and at gave me hope as an idealist. The last 4 episodes stretched my mind and emotions in new ways and I can't wait for the 2nd season to start.

I really enjoyed Hibana-sparks. And although the serie was not that great when you look at character development/depth, i was happy to see that there were some really good scenes in the middle and at the end of season 1. Personally i think the show should not continue because the story could collapse under its own weight. With this i mean that episodes 9 and 10 were soo ..... strange that it will be difficult to continue without creating an absurd storyline. I think that i rather read the book (152 pages) then to watch a dragged out netflix series.

PS: forgive me that i am unaware of the Japanese culural aspects, but i think the decisions that were made by the characters ( or the lack thereof ) should have been explained.

Too much detail would have diluted the genuineness of the culture reflected in this series. Watching this series felt so much like living in Japan. It's one of those, once you see it with your own eyes and feel it with your own presence, you'll understand. I think it was a beautiful representation of the struggle of someone early in their life struggling to follow their passion, responsibly...showing all the different colorful paths one could have taken in each character's life.
