Series info and storyline
Rebellion is an Irish historical fiction drama television miniseries that originally premiered on RTÉ in Ireland in January 2016, and subsequently debuted in the US on the Sundance channel on April 24, 2016. The series was written by Colin Teevan, directed by Finnish director Aku Louhmies and executive produced by Teevan, Catherine Magee and Clare Alan.
The historical series commemorates the events of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, celebrating the 100th anniversary of this defining moment in Irish and British history. It covers the events beginning with the outbreak of WWI, and as all the hopes for a quick and victorious campaign are lost, the society becomes less stable and Irish nationalism gets stronger. A group of friends from Dublin, Belfast and London emerge to play crucial and contradictory roles in Ireland's search for independence. The series stars Ruth Bradley, Paul Reid, Brian McCardie, Tom Turner, Michelle Fairly, Michael Ford-FitzGerald, Lydia McGuinness, Ian McElhinney and others.
Reception and renewal prospects
The series' original premiere in Ireland has had an impressive debut, with 619,000 viewers, peaking at episode 2 at 646,000 and subsequently dropping drastically to 487,000 viewers. Even with these unfortunate dynamics, RTÉ is said to still be contemplating a second series of the drama series. The US premiere drew 68,000 viewers, a number that is far from spectacular. Rebellion is rated 6.7/10 IMDb and 40% on Rotten Tomatoes reviews, and it does seem to have the potential to learn from its mistakes and bounce back in the second season, so while its future remains murky at the moment, there's definitely hope. I think not enough, Americans anyway, got to get familiar with the series, so hopefully it being on Netflix will give it notoriety it deserves as well as a larger audience and hopefully that will incline the priducers/creators to make Season 2. It was a great season and I know I'm terribly anxious to see it comtinue. Thanks for making TV watchable again, and please continue with this great series!
